Athlete of the Month Arcvhive

Meet Dale Homolka athlete of the Month of August.  Dale has been with us since the garage days of no heat or bathroom and fairly cramped quarters. He usually has a story or two to tell.  Dale is responsible for the  'Last day of Summer' gathering that we have on our deck each year before school starts.  This is one summer I am looking forward to ending with a few friends.

Upcoming Adventure – I am heading to MO in a few days to fly fish. I try to Fly fish for trout at least once a month all year long.

Tell us something we don't know about you. When I first started at Carriage House Crossfit, it was to become a better bike rider and racer. But, as time has passed my main motivation has changed to fly fishing. When I am on a stream, I am constantly moving as I try to cover a lot of ground in a day. You are fighting the current, trying to keep your feet under you as they are slipping on rocks, and then climbing up three to six foot banks in waders with a pack on. The other week I was fishing in Iowa, the Driftless region, I found myself walking in six to seven foot tall grass with no path for two river miles in 90 degree temps and I was thinking I am glad I spend time at Carriage House.  

When and how did you get started with us? Pete and I have spent a lot of time riding bikes together. Naturally, when you are riding for hours at a time your conversations cover a lot of ground. As I would ride over to Pete and Natalie’s house to meet Pete for a ride, I would stick my head in the door to see their new  “box” located in their garage (aka Carriage House). It was not long before Pete would throw me a pull up or a kettlebell swing as one would throw a stray cat a piece of their lunch out on the deck in the afternoon sun. With the urging of Natalie, this stray cat has never left.

What's your most memorable workout and least favorite workout? A work out that includes power cleans or clean and jerks will put a smile on my face! Any work out that has more than three burpees total is my least favorite, I believe it is the modern day scurvy.

What do you like best about working out with the morning classes? The morning class is where it is at! From the extremely supportive and positive vibe to Petes potpourri of musical delights. I am a morning person by nature, coming into the gym first thing in the morning can set a great mood for the rest of the day. There is just a different feeling in the gym in the morning as people come in still waking up,  talk or think about the day ahead over a PVC pipe as they loosen their shoulders, or maybe as they are rolling on a roller,  or doing monster kicks and candle sticks. Then as the clock approaches the top of the hour, we are all off to start the day full of energy with muscle that are warm and tired with accomplishments.

What would you tell newbies?  Both my daughters are now coming to Carriage House. When my oldest daughter Nora was looking for an activity that was in a positive atmosphere,  I suggested she come to crossfit. This is a great place to spend time, it doesnt matter if you can not yet accomplish a pull up or a push up. The people at the gym will be there to encourage you with positive comments of support. This is really about a quality of life choice, showing up and working out will not only make you feel good about yourself, it will help you with your mobility for other activities in your daily life. Lastly, more then three burpees in a “WOD” only feels like an eternity, it really is not an eternity.

What’s your favorite Cheat meal? A loaf of great bread! It is just as enjoyable for me to sit at a table with friends and eat the loaf of bread as it is to eat it in the car on the way home from HyVee’s bakery listening to old country or hip hop.
 
You are a new addition to the crayon box, what color and why. Burpee Green! A long time ago I worked at a bike shop, there was an older gentleman that work in the shop. Everyday he would turn the radio to the “G Gordon Liddy Show' at 10 in the morning. While most of us in the  shop did not subscribe to Liddy's philosophies, we were entertained by the show and Liddy’s talking points for that day. One day Liddy told a story of how he was deathly afraid of rats. As he was serving time for his misdeeds in a federal prison he was thinking about his fear of rats. He decided that the only way to get over the fear was to catch a rat and eat it which he went on to say he did. Whether the story was true or not I do not know, but, Liddy’s talking point that day was approaching your fears head on. So if I was a crayon and I was “BurpeeGreen” maybe, just maybe, I would like them more…but I doubt it.



Meet Matt Thomas Athlete of the Month for July.  If you are not sure who Matt is, he is one still smiling even though there may be a run in the wod.  We are all so happy you are part of our community!  Can’t wait till the big Day!


Occupation- Operations Manager at Archer Daniels Midland in Curran, IL

Hobbies – Anything outside/active/hands-on. Golf, kayaking, boating, basketball, obviously working out, recently biking with my new mountain bike from Walmart. I also like to do a little woodworking and work around the house.

Upcoming Adventure – Well, I guess the biggest upcoming adventure is marrying the other half of Team Fitness! But also going to Madison for the games and hopefully leaving the country for the first time on our honeymoon!

When and how did you get started with us?  I started crossfit in Decatur at ML Crossfit. I was there for about 8 months before ADM moved me to Naples and I decided to rent a house in Jacksonville. After our busy season I knew I needed to get back into crossfit. So I called up Natalie for an on-ramp and it just took off from there. I never thought I would meet so many great people at a crossfit gym – not to mention a regional athlete and top masters athletes. The relationships formed in Jacksonville are much stronger than ones I formed at ML Crossfit…probably because the size of the town and age group of people. ML’s average age was probably closer to 45 while our is probably a little lower. It was just what I needed moving to a new town…and I met a pretty cool chick here too.

What's your most memorable workout and least favorite workout? Helen is my least favorite workout! Pretty sure I almost passed out the first time I did it. Most memorable workout is probably one from the open – I think this year or last year – when Zach Samples was yelling at Craig Miller to keep going…After Craig finished, Zach said something to him as he was walking outside. Craig responded with a friendly hand gesture.

What do you like best about working out with the evening classes? Knowing where everyone’s favorite spots are to workout. Everyone has their favorite bar or wall ball target and I think it’s funny that we all know where everyone likes to be.

What would you tell newbies?  Stick with it for a month at least. I did my first crossfit workout while I was in college and then didn’t try it again for another 2 years. If I could go back, I would have stuck with it while I was at school.

What’s your favorite Cheat meal? Allison’s baking! Cookies, protein balls, peanut butter cookie cake, etc. etc.

You are a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? Probably white…because everyone knows you run faster and jump higher in white.

Meet Jen Little athlete of the month for June.  Part of what makes the noon class so cool is Jen.  She is that CrossFit Girl with the tatoos, super cute hair and heavy barbell lifts.  Always smiling, cheerful and friends with everyone!  Thanks for bringing in the sunshine our community loves it!

Occupation:  Premium accounting Supervisor by day- Newly appointed sever at BWW by night..Gotta pay the bills!

Hobbies:

Besides showing up to crossfit, I love to go hiking. Ride my bike. Binge watch seasons of different shows I love. I love to get in the car and go for a ride and blast my music.. I love it... I love being a mom and being with my wild and free spirited little ones doing the things they love.Deep down I love being a “soccer”mom. I’m also a former champion backgammon player. I used to play every day in the pool halls in NY. I have several tournament wins under my belt. I still love a good game!

When and How did You get started?

July 2015- I had wanted to join Crossfit for a couple of years ( Christmas About was my inspiration) but didn’t have the courage to walk in the door. I joined fitness world instead- where I met Jo! After months of going back and forth about crossfit -she somehow convinced me to finally walk in the door. The rest is history!

Most memorable Wod?

My most memorable wod was 16.2. I did it at noon. I was the only one there. Pete was my judge. Jolene was my rock- my cheerleader. She guided me all the way through. Tod and Natalie were there cheering me on. I was doing the scaled work out. My only goal was to finish the first two rounds in time and get the 13 -75# squat cleans because I knew there was no way that 95 was happening…Well not only did I make it to the 95# squat cleans- I got one! Almost had a second.. That was a big day for me and has stuck with me since!


Least favorite wod?

Fran- She will be the death of me..



What do I like best about CHCF?

What I love best about CHCF is the community.  The Friendships. The constant encouragement. I love that no matter how hard it gets- there is always someone beside me to help get through it. In and out of the box. So much of the joy I have in my life right now has come from relationships I’ve formed here over the last almost two years! It’s worth it for that alone.



What would I tell newbies?

Keep going. I’m never going to say it gets easier but it certainly gets better. We become better.. I remember when I couldn’t hold a gallon of milk without my arm shaking and having to support it with my other arm.. Look at me now..It barley shakes! Haha



Favorite cheat meal?
My home made chicken cutlets.. In case you didn’t know I am an AMAZING cook! Especially Italian!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Pizza.. I usually throw down on some as soon as I hit the NYS line every time I go home. Come on July!!



You are a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?   I really don’t know! Maybe I’m not that deep. Maybe I’d be the bright fun colored crayon…LOL



Meet Ricky Padilla athlete of the month for May.  He inspires a love/hate relationship that we should have with a coach that pushes us to our limits however, makes it fun and makes us better.  He is now a much stronger version of that guy that came to our gym that first day with Phillip and now we are fortunate to have him as a coach!

Occupation: Firefighter for the city of Actionville.

Hobbies: the obvious ones include: CrossFit, staying current on strength and conditioning. More recently, reading up on firefighting articles. But I love spending time with my girls and friends.

Upcoming adventure: Everyday Is an adventure with the Padillas! Jess and I are excited to spend time with the girls this summer and oh yeah we are expecting baby Cruz in august!

When and How did You get started?
I was introduced to Crossfit by Phillip 'No Shirt' Kinder back when we worked together in 2013?? He literally wouldn't stop talking about crossfit and complaining about how sore he was from lifting, pull-ups, running...etc. It was so annoying that I finally looked it up. I was pretty apprehensive because I was overweight and very out of shape. However, in true crossfit fashion Phil was encouraging and reassured me that nobody really goes into crossfit in shape and that everyone has to start somewhere. Phil and I stopped by after work to check it out, talked to Jolene and rest is history. Thanks, Phillip! I know he still checks the website.

Most memorable Wod?
I have many memorable moments within the wods...Like the time Nick completed 120 unbroken pistols at DTown.
The time Nick and I got 30-40 no-reps on the slamball/wallballs down in Edwardsville....we blew it.
The time Joe got his first ring muscle up and how he roared like King Leónidas and the 300 Spartans
The time 3snatches and 3jerks dominated the tire obstacle course at DTown. While I'm standing there thinking, 'why is this tire so f-ing heavy?'
Or the time I died tried to keep up with nick on Ohs/ctb wod at ice breathers....I just kept thinking to myself 'why is nick not tired?'

Least favorite wod?

I don't have a least favorite wod. I definitely have my list of least favorite movements...(pistols,hspu) but everyone should embrace their weaknesses and try not to suck at them.

What do I like best about coaching at CHCF?

Two reasons:

I love the people. I've always enjoyed coaching and it's rewarding to see people get healthy and stronger.

More importantly, you ladies are such a positive influence on my girls. There isn't a better place where Logann and Bailey can see this combination of strength, beauty and kindness. Jess and I are very fortunate.


What would I tell newbies?

Make it to class as often as prescribed. You will be sore, we all are. Keep coming to class and you'll notice differences. Make friends, have fun, get fit and enjoy life!

Favorite cheat meal?

Hmm...I just like to eat.

What color crayon?
I feel like I'm retaking my psych evaluation... I would have to pick purple. Purple is like a chameleon. It's an awesome color by itself. However, it works well with other crayons. You want to keep it classy and dapper?combine it with a gray or black. Want to party? Boom, let's get crazy with orange and green. Just want to Nextflix and chill? Mellow out with yellow and her sister light yellow.





Meet April's Athlete of the month Dan Scott.  Lucky for us Nick G suggested we call him back in the fall of 2015.  He is the one who can make the 'wodmaster' smile and laugh, for that we are eternally grateful!  Enjoy reading his bio, I almost want to come in and wod with the 5/6amers.

When and How did you get started with us?  I was getting ready to get back in the gym after my son was born a few years ago. Natalie texted me and asked if I wanted to try out CHCF. I said, 'OK.'  Glamorous story.

What's your most memorable workout and least favorite workout? My most memorable workout was getting my first bar muscle up last year in Open workout 16.3. I was elated to finally get up there, but I remember having to ask Jo how to get down...

My least favorite workout, which some coaches actually think is a good warm up (what's that?) for a WOD including squats, is when someone feels it necessary to put 'Flower' by Moby on and we do repeated squats for 3:26.

What do you like best about working out with the 5/6am class? Everyone is fighting their own battle, but we all support each other. There is no judgement, only encouragement. People always have smiles on their faces and try to motivate me with phrases such as, 'That workout was terrible. You'll love it.'

What would you tell newbies?  If you hurt, good. It means you did something and you're getting stronger.

What’s your favorite Cheat meal? I would have to eat healthy in order to cheat. I cut carbs completely out of my diet for a week once and I vow to never do it again. Bread, whether it be by itself, dipped in olive oil, or on the bottom of a pizza, is my happy place.

You are a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? I don't believe in 'new colors.' If it's not in the box of 8 colors, it doesn't exist to me. 'Blue-green' is not a thing. I taught elementary students for 7 years and I can't tell you how many times I had to tell a student 'just pick one' when a sheet required 'light blue' if a number fit an equation. If you're new to CHCF, you will probably hear Pete and I arguing about this, or something else, at 6am, weekdays only.




Meet Kim Nelson athlete of the Month for March!  We love having her as part of our community!  She is the wise one who knows what to say when we need to hear it. She is always willing to share her faith and has that approachabilty that makes it easy to be her friend.  She are part of the Nelson clan.  Who doen't love the Nelsons!

Occupation- Administrator for the Early Childhood and Multiple Disabilities Programs at Four Rivers Special Education District.  This is my 27th year in special education.  I specialize in the area of autism and students who have lower cognitive and physical functioning abilities.  

Hobbies –Listening to music (I LOVE music), traveling (I LOVE to go places and learn about new things and people), my family-while not so much considered a “hobby”, it seems most of what I enjoy is doing things with friends and family no matter what that may be!

Upcoming Adventure – Mexico! Ed and I are going to Mexico with a few friends from the gym.  Riviera Maya, look out, here we come!

When and How did you get started with us?  September of 2013? I think this is my third year.  Ask my family how I got started!  Haha  Actually, they were all coming and, at first, I resisted due to a previous experience.  However, after many months of hearing nothing BUT CROSSFIT, I agreed to try it out.  Since I am truly a competitive person, I couldn’t let them come without me.  The motto in our family (from me) is “Beat your dad! Help your mama!” haha So, I guess they helped me realize Crossfit was a great thing!

What's your most memorable workout and least favorite workout?  One of my most memorable workouts wasn’t really a workout, it was doing the lifting afterward.  We were doing power (or hang?) cleans and supposed to find a one rep max. Due to a little encouragement, teaching and no sympathy, Ricky and Nick G, I managed to clean 125 pounds, which to this date is a personal record as well as feat! A big thanks to both of them for having the faith in me I wasn’t sure I had!  My least favorite?  ANYTHING with those dang burpees! Those things just take the gas right out of me!

What do you like best about working out with the 5:15pm class?  I love, love, love the people and the positive vibe.  Though I have to say, the entire gym gives that off.  I love that everyone seems ageless in the gym when all are together. (except those times when I’m still lying on the ground and everyone else is up and moving…haha)

What would you tell newbies?  I would tell them to never underestimate themselves-with anything.  Be willing to try everything the gym brings and do it the right way. As Natalie always says, “leave your ego at the door.” Sometimes that can be hard if you’re competitive.  If you’re sore, stretch it out.  If it’s heavy, keep lifting, you’ll get it. If it sucks, take it on, you control your own suck. Think positively even if you don’t want to.  You will always feel better about yourself after a workout, no matter what you might think beforehand.  If you have issues, work around them-I think I’ve become the queen of modifications.  Stay with it, it’s worth it.

What’s your favorite Cheat meal? SPAGHETTI, SPAGHETTI AND SPAGHETTI (I’m not the best eater, but not the worst either)

You are a new addition to the crayon box.  I know this is not an addition, but it could be if one was taken out and put back in.  I’m the broken one. The one that still has and can still give the same bright color; the one that has the same brightness and newness within, though it’s outside appearance doesn’t show it.  




Meet Febuary's Athlete of the Month, Robert Brammeier.
Its time to highlight one of our esteemed 5am athletes.  He brings in the just the right stuff to help keep the 5amers going.  He is coming up to his 1 year anniversary and he is not the same guy since his first posted wod.  We love having you in our gym!  We have changed a few questions......

Occupation- I am a supervisor at Perma-Bound (ten years), I am a volunteer firefighter for the village of South Jacksonville, I also drive limos and buses for Executive Transportation.

Hobbies – I love hunting, bar games, and keeping my wife and children happy!

Upcoming Adventure – My wife and I are having our third child in May. It will be our first girl. The story is quite interesting of how this came about. I am sure if you ask around you can hear how it went.

Some things you don't know about me – My wife and I have been together since the summer after eighth grade. I wasn't always the easiest person to get along with. She and her family have molded me into the man and proud father that I am today.

Favorite quote: Work hard, love always, and don't forget to laugh ( at yourself or anything really). I also like it, but hate it when Joe D. says, ' You are going to get stronger today Robert'. I know that means that I am probably going to die!

When and How did you get started with us? I started the first week of Feb 2016. I started coming to this gym because I heard that this crossfit thing was the hardest workout you could do. I needed something that would work me so hard that I wanted to puke (MISSION ACCOMPLISHED)!  I had been contemplating it for awhile before I actually joined. I needed some sort of release of the pent up aggression that I tend to have. My original goals were not to be a super fit human being, but just to use this to make me a better human, friend, and a more patient father and husband. These are obviously goals that I will have for the rest of my life. Getting fit was just a bonus.

What's your most memorable workout and least favorite workout? I can't say that there has been a 'most memorable' yet. My least favorite was probably a wod where we rowed for a half hour or something to that effect.

What do you like best about working out with the 5am class? I love to get my day started with it. It gets my body up and activated. I also love it because with all of the other things I do throughout the day I can do this while my family is still sleeping. I don't have to take more time out of the day away from them to do something I have come to love. I also, think it is funny that here lately it has felt like a sat morning class. Lots of people.

What would you tell newbies? The pain never goes away! Not to sound cynical, but it only comes less frequent. Think about it this way. If you are not hurting you probably did work hard enough. The biggest thing to remember is to let your body recover. If something hurts, let it heel.

Whats your favorite Cheat meal? Ha what's a cheat meal. I eat what I want, when I want, and how ever much I feel like eating at the time. As I said before I LOVE CAKE! I am sure that if I ate better I could become a better athlete, but I just really like to eat. Sorry, Beth K. Heck one of my many nicknames is Tapeworm!

You are a new addition to the crayon box.  What color would you be and why? This isn't really a color, but probably layered. Like an ever lasting gobstopper. MMMMM candy! Once you use the first layer of color there is a next, a next, and so on. If you can get through the first layer there is a whole other picture to be colored with the next.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why? I would be a dog. I love dogs. They are loyal to a fault, will love you no matter what, and will still lay down their life for you in a blink of an eye. Plus like me they can be stubborn, and smell at times! But I love them none the less.



Meet January's Athlete of The Month, Jen Plunk.  She usually comes in with a smile and  some funny story to tell.  Positive attitude, upbeat yet focused and very determined.  Her Oly lifting numbers are impresssive and she will get her toes to bar!  Its fun to be on your Team 'Just Jen'!

The people. The family. The second family that I've made there.


What is your most memorable wod?
Probably completing Murph because it's such a meaningful wod. And to know that I could complete it was just an amazing feeling.

What would you tell newbies?
Don't be afraid. You're going to be so amazed at all the things you'll accomplish. It's just amazing.

I like... ice cream, fountain Mountain Dew, crossfit, shoes, & teeth.

I eat... bad & usually more than I'd like to.

I am… not only stronger physically, but even more so mentally because of Crossfit.

I do... really want to perfect toes to bar by January 21st.



Meet Athlete of the month for December Beth Kershaw.  She has big shoulders to lean on, sometimes very loud and can quietly listen.  Humble, grounded and shares her faith on the white board with us all.  We love having you as a trainer and don't be afraid to tell Pete his music sucks at 5am!

Occupation-I'm a firefighter/Captain for the City of Jacksonville. My job is to make sure Steve, Curt, Dan, Joey, Ricky and the rest of my brothers stay safe and go home to their families after their shift.

Hobbies –Besides crossfitting (which I think is more a way of life) -teaching and scuba diving for fun and not so much fun working with the Morgan Co dive team - hunting and the less active hobby of collecting stamps(yes you used to have these things you licked and placed on an envelop) and Coke memorabilia

Upcoming Adventure –Finally doing my 1st competition with my favorite niece-Allison a.k.a 'Sunshine' in January - she'll have to carry me!

Some things you don't know about me – I've fought a bull in Spain years ago- ask Ken Bradbury about it sometime. I only went to college to play basketball. Our IC women's basketball team were the Midwest Conference South Division Champions in 1985. And I ended up with a teaching degree.

When did you start CrossFitting? January 2013

Why did you join CHCF? Well after trying to stay in shape for my job, dabbling with stuff like P90X and training for stair climbs, biathlons and triathlons (way to much running)- Curt keep telling me about this thing called Crossfit and if I tried it he thought I would like it.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  My 1st wod was Karen with a 8# or 10# wb- thank goodness!! I didn't get to finish it (probably couldn't anyway) - My dog 'Trappy' was having issues with having his tail/cancer removed and Bob came and got me. I still miss him a lot. But that's another story. Curt was right- this is way better than running by yourself!

What is your favorite part about CrossFit? The people, the family that you make. You really are family to me and my second home. I'm truly blessed to have you all in my life.

What is your most memorable wod?  Anytime I see someone accomplish a new skill, PR a lift or 'Rx' their wod and the excitement and smile on their face when they say 'oh yeah I did it!' Sharing their joy is the best!

What would you tell newbies? Everyday is a new day and the only easy day was yesterday when you take that journey to make decisions about yourself that are life changing. You will feel good about yourself and realize the time you spend with our community is the best part of your day. Once you meet the people and drink the 'Kool-aid' and yes feel like someone has reached inside your chest and tried to rip your lungs out, it'll be the best thing you've done.

I like... 5am class- it's the best part of my day

I eat...better than I used to- healthy most of the time, failure part of the time

Meet athlete of the month Cody Gray.  We are so very happy he has joined in our little community!  Cody comes in with an abundence of energy and has channeled it into turning himself into a worthy competitor.  Things are always interesting when his little girls come in along with an extra child or two.  How do you do that?  Congratulations on your L1 CrossFit certification!

Hobbies – With 3 little ladies at home, my hobbies have slowly dwindled to my time at Carriage House; from February to October I watch baseball...until this year when I had to watch baseball in November, because I LOVE THE 2016 World Series CHAMPION Chicago Cubs

Upcoming Adventure – Everyday in the life of Sara and I is an adventure.  Our girls make every moment without them less fun, and every moment with them something that can't be put into words.  They are so fun, sweet, silly, smart, wild, loud, and so many more things that I am leaving out...less important scheduled events include XLT Turkey Bash November 19 and Winter WODS December 3 and 4.

Some things you don't know about me – Sara is the Division 1 athlete in my house; I have a scar on my left middle finger from making spit ball shooters out of mechanical pencils on the bus ride home in 5th grade; my birthmark is...I guess 2 is enough for now :-P

When did you start CrossFitting?  I started at CH in August 2015, I spent the prior year (Aug. 2014-Aug 2015) learning to becoming threatening in three ways.

Why did you join CHCF?  Matt Thomas, Craig Miller, and Zack Samples destroyed my team at the 2015 Battle for the Hill.  They took home 1st place in the scaled competition, while making it look easy.  I wasn't sure I would be able to do what they were doing, but I had to learn if it was possible...what a year.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  After completing my first WOD I wanted to know how to get more, to get better, and how to hurt less!

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?  I have been involved in sports for the majority of my life, I teach PE for a living, I have been in a weight room for 90% of my life...this is the element of fitness that can bring people of every ability together.  I have yet to find another element of fitness that can provide people as much joy, as much success, as many observable and real results within a short time frame.

What is your most memorable wod?  Many workouts hold a unique place in the memorable category, because it is so fun in a variety of ways.  Working out in California with Curt was AWESOME!  Overcoming an obstacle to post a better score for the Open this year was great!  Anytime I think of a 5am workout I have nothing but fantastic things to say.  But competition is unique; competing in St. Louis with Casie and the Padillas was fun and D-town with DK, Curt, Alaina, Mysti, and Casie was humbling.  The last WOD at D-Town was the best...it will be special forever; my teammates, the energy, the WOD.

What would you tell newbies?  1.  Cheer for the Chicago Cubs, it is a great time to jump on the bandwagon, they are the reigning World Series CHAMPIONS!!!  2.  But I guess if you are talking about the box and CrossFit, Some of us like CF more than you ever have to for find or feel success; have a high ambition and strive for your goals.  Carriage House is a place where many paths are leading to a similar end where all strive to attain a new comfort zone.  Keep coming back, embrace the grind, chop down goals by setting them and

I like...oh my goodness, so many things (Did I mention the World Series CHAMPION Chicago Cubs?).  Hang out with me and you find out quickly...I would climb a rope or do a muscle up or overhead squat or snatch (lightweight please!) in any WOD.  

I eat...anything while trying to make choices that will benefit what we do at the box; after learning about the Zone Diet, it will be interesting to see if my intake/fuel choices change

I am…Christian, a Husband (luckiest guy in the world), a daddy to 3 lovely ladies (Bentley 4, Kennedy 2, Hadley 1), a coach (basketball, softball), and a CrossFit coach with L1 certification (YAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!)  

I do...go to church at Our Redeemer (my wife and I were married there, and all three girls were baptized there) but sometimes sneak to First Christian; with three girls it is so hard to be ready for church and out of the house by 830 on Sunday mornings!!!






Meet Jessica Padilla athlete of the month for October.   She is very encouraging to those who need it.  She has two beautiful little girls and she is an outstanding role model for young moms.   By the way if you have not noticed, she is slightly competitive.

Occupation- kindergarten teacher/ mom :)

Hobbies – I love spending time with my family and friends. My hobbies right now are the kids' hobbies;soccer, tumbling, and music class. 'My' time is at the gym!

Upcoming Adventure – We just sold our house and are working to remodel our new house! So hopefully we will soon be moving.

Some things you don't know about me – I was born and lived in San Diego for 10 years.
I got my undergrad from NIU. And lived in Dekalb as a nanny to 5 little boys!

Why did you join CHCF?  My husband-Ricky (Do you know him?!!!)
I was looking for a way to get back in shape after having my little Bailey. As all of you know, crossfit is very time consuming (and life  consuming)! I missed my husband- 2 babies, full time jobs, and now he wanted to be at the gym too?!? I needed to know what and who he was talking about CONSTANTLY :). So I jumped in and never looked back.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?
I remember feeling so very, very out of shape. And I remember thinking, How am I ever going to remember to move all those muscles at once?!?

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?
I know everyone says this, but it is so true... I love the people. I love that EVERY single person not only knows my kids but I'm sure has helped them at some point. I love my friends that I have made since joining. I love that I have so many people to check on me and keep me accountable. I love that everyone is so kind and encouraging. You all have turned me into a much more positive person.

What is your most memorable wod?
I have so many! I would have to says the last wod at Dtown last year. I went harder than i knew was physically possible!

What would you tell newbies? After every workout, instead of saying how you scale it, just tell yourself you are proud to finish. The weights and movements will come, be proud of yourself for coming to the gym every time!

 I like.. The weekends, when I get to hug my Ricky and my kids as much as I want :).
 I eat... 😬 mostly what is left on my kids' plates.

Meet athlete of the Month for September, Allison Phelps.
We love having her in the gym!  The nickname Sunshine says it all.  That consistant hard work she puts  in every day is inspiring to everyone!

Occupation- I teach physical education at Beardstown Middle School. Some years I teach health as well. I also coach middle school girls' track and field.

Hobbies – Other than crossfitting, I enjoy playing with my dogs, baking/cooking, and reading.

Upcoming Adventure –  hopefully going to be having Hannah plan my wedding soon 😂😜 haha but a real upcoming adventure will be competing Rx at Dtown

When did you start CrossFitting? November 2014

Why did you join CHCF?  My Aunt Beth had been telling me about crossfit for years, but I was really into running road races, triathlons, and other things. I didn't really know what crossfit was, but after feeling like I might drown in a half iron man I decided that I'd had enough of that and I would try crossfit.

 What were your thoughts after completing your first wod? In my on ramp Natalie had me do 3 rounds of rowing Helen. I was doing jumping pull-ups, a light KB, and I can only imagine how ugly my rowing looked. I was breathing so hard and struggling through every rep. When it was over I remember asking if real Helen was actually 5 rounds. I couldn't imagine doing 1 more pullup let alone 2 more rounds, but I knew everyone in here would do all 5 rounds when Helen was posted as the wod, so I wanted to be able to too. I knew I had along ways to go, but I was hooked.

 What is your favorite part about CrossFit?   The people really are the best part, but it is pretty cool doing things you couldn't a month ago. I love how challenging it is, and that you do something different every single day. It beats the hell out of running the same roads every day.

What is your most memorable wod?  Probably Rxing Murph this year. Elisha, Jolene, and I trained for all winter to be able to do that. Also, Murph has a lot of meaning to me after reading/watching Lone Survivor.

 What would you tell newbies? Prepare to be humbled everyday, but stick with it!

I like.. Breathing hard and lifting heavy objects

I eat....a pint of Ben & Jerry's every Sunday with Matthew ....but also lots of meat, fruit, and veggies

Meet Dan Klendworth athlete of the month for August!  Besides being a strong solid athlete that kicks butt, he goes out of his way to help others.  I like having him in class because he consistantly works hard, demonstrates movement well and stays positive!

When did you start CrossFitting?    I started CrossFitting in November of 2012 with Cool Hand Curt and Super Steve, but due to bad from hurt my back and found my way back to the new box location in June of 2015.

Why did you join CHCF?    I was tired of being average in my fitness and not getting any better while seeing others improve and enjoy themselves at CHCF

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?   in 2012 I thought finally I can beat Curt at something...yeah, not working out for me now.

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?    Thats easy...just seeing people at different stages in their fitness journey and sharing smiles and laughs with all the CHCF members.  I love seeing people get that first muscle up or pullup or any achievement that gives them that huge uncontrollable 'I just did something I never thought I could do' smile.  

What is your most memorable wod?   Well, before I was at CHCF I was doing the Icebreather and fell off T2B and got the wind knocked out of me mid WOD.  I also tried doing DT for the first time and got to the 3rd round thinking that 155 was harder than I expected until someone pointed out I could not add and was doing 185.

What would you tell newbies?    Take advice and pointers from anybody and everybody at CHCF.  Chances are something someone has tried or that one tip or thought process will work for you like it did for them.  Always be positve, but most of all have fun.

I like.. when I can bring my kids to the box and they have as much fun as I do.

I eat.... POORLY...as Beth K and Pete point out to me...Nutrition is the base of the Pyramid at the box.  (Donuts and Milk are my Kryptonite)

Meet Paitra Gibson Athlete for the Month of July.  She is that quiet, strong, hard worker that is quick to make friends with you and share a barbell.  She is easy to coach, and has made big strides in the gym recently.  If you need some inspiration to improve some aspect of your life she is a good one to talk to!

I teach computer class to Kindergarten through 8th grade at Our Saviour School

Hobbies –
Making lists... is that a hobby? I love cross fitting, reading, baking (does not fit in with my whole 30), traveling, learning, being outside (minus the bugs), and just spending time with my family and friends.

Upcoming Adventure –
Besides my daughter turning 13 this year - yikes - we will be traveling to Pittsburgh over the 4th and Chris (my hubby) and I will be turning 40 within the next couple of months, another yikes.  But the main adventure I am currently on is my Whole 100 - I have done 3 rounds of Whole 30 and I am about a third of the way through my Whole 100 - it truly is a way of life (blessed to have kids that eat anything)

Some things you don't know about me –
I LOVE dancing and can bust out a move whenever hip hop or rap is on.  I took 2 years of Portuguese in college as I am part Portuguese and didn't want to learn just any old language.  I enjoy hunting, but when I killed my first deer, I did cry.  My husband stalked me just about a month before we started dating - just don't ask him because he might not have the same story that I do.  I love to draw portraits using just pencil. Just a couple of years ago, maybe more, I was Joe Darnell's youth group leader.  I worked at CSC with Torri and with Todd & Jill at Dairy Queen (the good ole days).

I joined the box in December of 2014

Why did you join CHCF?  
I was informally introduced to Cross Fit by Elisha (thanks Lish) a couple of months before I joined CHCF.  I saw how much she enjoyed going and how it had transformed her life for the better, so I thought I would give it a try. Plus, I wanted to get back into shape (still working towards that). But ultimately I wanted to be the best version of myself for my husband, my kids, etc., so, I knew I needed to set aside this time for me.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?
How red is my face? Am I breathing that hard (imagine Darth Vader)?  And what have I gotten myself into?

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?  
My favorite parts are the people and the variety of WOD's.  The people are not just people or athletes or coaches, they are family.  Each one brings their own talents and gifts to the box to share with others - I have never met a more positive and encouraging group of people!  In addition, I love how each day brings something new - a new skill learned, a new challenge, a new PR, the list goes on.

What is your most memorable wod?
Just within the last month I have had some very memorable wod's: the partner wod with Natalie and the one with Pete - where I felt stronger than I had in the last couple of months; the one we just completed with Nick - and Torri and Jeff were my partners - again, I felt stronger and a pinch faster; and then when I climbed the rope and completed my 5 pull-ups.  These are all game changers for me - Oh, and I also got my mile pace under 10 minutes...again, game changers because I am seeing and enjoying being able to push myself to places I did not imagine I would go.

What would you tell newbies?  
You will not find a better place to spend an hour of your day! Do not give up.  When you fall done, there will be many there to lift you up.  Try not to compare yourself to others - 'Do not compare your Beginning to someone else's Middle'

I like.. watching Bones and reading historical fiction (Kate Morton is one of my favorite authors)

I eat.... to fuel my body (clean 95% of the time)

Meet Athlete for the month of June, Marybeth Young.  She has set the bar in what it means to look and to be like a grandmother.  She consistanly wins or places in running events.  While with us she has weathered some life stressers and still kept coming.  She has also worked around physical issues and is now getting ready for a marathon.  Thanks for being part of our community Marybeth!    

Occupation-  I work as a Paraprofessional at Four Rivers Special Education, Garrison School
 
Hobbies – Running & crossfit. I try and run a couple of 1/2 marathons a year and several 5k's. I also love doing yoga when I have time.

Why did you join CHCF? Stacy Lemon kept mentioning it to me, she thought I'd really like it...I was ready for something different from the regular routine at the gym. It didn't take long until I was hooked!

 
What is your favorite part about CrossFit? I love the group workout where everyone is supporting & encouraging you to keep going! Also, all the great friends I've made. I love my 4:15 class & noon class during the summer. It's the best therapy! You can't stress about something and do burpees at the same time. Ha ha
 
What is your most memorable wod? Murph for sure. The first time I did it, my hands were ripped from the pulls-ups, the shower was so painful!! I'm sure everyone who's completed Murph can relate!
 
What would you tell newbies?  I didn't understand the wods when I first started crossfit...they seemed confusing..the coaches were always helpful, so don't let that intimidate you. It gets easier..
 
I like....watching Property Brothers on HGTV, I secretly hope they would flip a house for me and design a beautiful kitchen! Ha ha
 
I eat....Grilled Salmon every chance I get!!

Meet Jason Wardell Athlete of the Month for May.  Its been fun to watch his progress over the last few months with his continued pursuit of excellence.  He is such an asset to our gym for so many reasons.  Keep up the good work!
                             
Hello I am Jason Wardell, I am from Murrayville, Il born and raised.  I work construction.  I am a supervisor for welders and fitters.  I am also a police officer in Murrayville and the assistant Fire chief.

Hobbies: I am an outdoor person I like hunting fishing playing softball and everything thing else outdoors.

Upcoming adventures:  My wife and I are expecting a little boy May 23rd.

When did you start CrossFit?  I started crossfit 2 years ago.  I started CHCF in December of 2015 because I was going to another gym, it was the same things every other week.  The warm ups were the same thing every day, so I talked to a couple of people and decided to come to CHCF to better myself.  

What were your thoughts after completeing your first wod?  After completing my first wod I was thinking, wow what was that.  I had never such a challenging workout like that and that is what I like.                

My favorite part of crossfit is that you don't do the same thing everyday.  It is something different every day.  The people at CHCF are great, the trainers and everyone that goes there.            

The most memorable wod so far would have to be the FITZ.  It was amazing how everyone pulled together and did what they did for that family it means alot to me. Scot was a good friend of mine and I thank all of you for what you did to help.

Meet Jessica Martinez:
Occupation- I don’t have a big girl job right now… but I do work at Target over the summer as a stocker and I cut grass at my dad’s apartment complexes. I will be going to grad school next fall for my doctorate in clinical psychology and I will hopefully have a big girl job after that. (fingers crossed)

Hobbies – Hmmm…. Well I played soccer most of my life. Now I really enjoy CrossFit, running, reading, hanging out with sister/friends, kissing my puppy, and watching videos of Lauren Fisher on YouTube.

Upcoming Adventure – After graduation, Joe and I are going to go to LA and San Diego together. I’ve traveled a lot, however, I’ve never stayed for a prolonged period of time in California and I have always wanted to go. We are also visiting Joe’s friend who is in the Navy while in San Diego. Hopefully, we will hit up some cool CrossFit gyms while we are there. (Joe keeps making fun of me, because I keep talking about how I just want to get doughnuts at this famous little bakery while we are there.)

Some things you don't know about me – I’m not really that cool to have things you don’t know about me L. I guess something that people don’t really know is that my brother shaped me to become the woman I am today. I lost my brother when I was a sophomore in high school. He was my best friend and rock. He taught me to always be tough, humble, and work hard. I am forever thankful for that.

When did you start CrossFitting? I started CrossFitting last January I think. It was the best decision I have made in a very long time. Over winter break last year, I was looking up YouTube videos of marathon runners. I thought marathon running was something I really wanted to get into. However, somehow a video of Lauren Fisher popped up and I just started watching it. I was thinking “What the heck is CrossFit?”. After that, I started researching and looking up more videos. I became so intrigued by it and had to try it for myself.

Why did you join CHCF? I joined CHCF after googling online about CrossFit and Jacksonville. I also was working out by myself a lot and just thought that was getting so boring/redundant. When I finally did my On Ramp classes and my first WOD I knew I was hooked. Also, everyone was so supportive and nice that I just knew CHCF was the box for me.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod? I honestly laid on the ground and was thinking “What the heck did I get myself into? Why did I enjoy being in pain for that long?” Also, I remember Joe looking at me and saying “I was questioning why I am doing this to myself.” Hahahaha. Those were honestly the best thoughts though. I loved how hard it pushed me individually and I loved how everyday was different.

What is your favorite part about CrossFit? My favorite part about CrossFit I’d have to say is the people and the constant randomness. I love how I can come into the gym and just talk to people right away. Everyone is so open and caring. It is the best feeling in the world to just feel welcome and encouraged. I also just love the randomness of CrossFit. One day you can be doing 200m runs for 20 mins and the next you could be doing 100 squats and 50 c2b. You just never know and always have to come with the right mindset.

What is your most memorable wod? Unfortunately, I don’t remember my first WOD. However, I guess that the next most memorable one after that would be the first WOD I did this January after coming back from soccer. It was SO hard after taking that much time off of CrossFit. I remember thinking “Oh I am going to workout all Christmas break, come back and be fine.” No. I was not fine. However, that’s CrossFit for ya and I love it!

What would you tell newbies?  I would tell newbies to never give up, be patient, and do more CrossFit. Everyday I was in in the box I always found something else I couldn’t do. It was so aggravating. I just wanted to be able to walk in and do those things right away. However, CrossFit is really about doing more CrossFit. If you aren’t good at something- just keep trying it again and again. Do NOT give up. In other words, you just really have to be good at accepting your faults and continually working at them. I remember I wanted to get kipping pullups so bad that I worked on them everyday. In fact, I worked on them so much that I got 2 rips on my right hand and 1 on my left hand. I was so determined. Just keep working and things will come! Be patient.

I like.. my puppy and all dogs. Her name is Gracie and she is what we call a chiweenie (half weenie and half chihuahua.) She is so tiny, but she thinks she is a Rottweiler. She barks and growls at everything. However, she is SO cuddly. She is my first dog and she is like my little sister.

I eat.... healthy. Freshmen and Sophomore year of college I ate absolutely terrible. Junior year I tried to do paleo, but I was always hangry (yes, hangry). This year I took on a completely new approach. I eat healthy, don’t measure it, and I stay away from gluten most of the time. (Unless I am having a cheat meal.)

I am… thankful I found CrossFit and all the wonderful people at CHCF.

I do... like food. Lots and lots of food. And ice-cream.


Meet Joe Tooley:
Occupation- Full time student at the moment. Next step who knows... either graduate school or find a job, or both.

Hobbies – I love to read (I finish a book in about 4 days), write, go fishing, and play any sport I can. My favorite thing to do is go snowmobiling. My dad, brother, uncle and I have been going for almost 6 years now. We travel to the upper peninsula of Michigan for a couple of days and enjoy the wonders of the mountains, while having a little fun at high speeds!

Upcoming Adventure – I usually go to a music festival in the summer but I have decided to save that money and go on a trip to California! Jess and I are going to visit my best friend who is in the navy and stationed in San Diego.

Some things you don't know about me - I am half Croatian (formerly Yugoslavia), my mother was born there and moved here when she was about 4.

When did you start CrossFitting? January 2015 But soccer took a lot of time away from it.

Why did you join CHCF? Jess found some Lauren Fisher videos on youtube, so naturally I stumbled on Rich Froning. I was so impressed with his ability and thought it took an equal amount of skill and pure heart.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?
I made sure I knew where the garbage can was.

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?
Crossfit gives me a rush, much like the one I found on the soccer field. Not only is it fun to push myself and try to get better, I am also getting healthier.

What is your most memorable wod?
Every wod is memorable for me, each one attacks something new that I need work on. Although I would say that 16.1 stood out because it was my first open wod.

What would you tell newbies?  
Make sure you enjoy it. At times its gonna be awful, but get to know the people around you and embrace the suck with them.

I like.. Long hikes, or bike rides. Nature is something beautiful and special.
I eat.... Pretty much anything. My secret love is FRESH seafood.
I am... Always looking for new hobbies to take on and become better at. In my opinion we should always try to better ourselves.

Meet Athlete of the Month Bianca Savarese.  She is literally the quickest girl I know.
Running, squating, heavy oly lifts, wods...   She is also quick to smile, help out and she knows how to quickly make friends with everyone.  Best of luck with your plans on your next round of school.  We will all miss you very much!

Occupation- I don't have a real job yet, but I'm working on it! I will be graduating this May from Illinois College and then making my way to Lexington, Kentucky for MORE school. If everything goes as planned, I should be a dentist in 4 years!

Hobbies –  I love playing soccer, running, tanning at the beach and cross fitting, but other unhealthier hobbies include watching Netflix, baking (and then eating) stuff with lots of chocolate, and occasionally napping more than I probably should. I always love spending time with my family, but being so far away that's nearly impossible, so the time I get to spend with this Crossfit Fam is one of my favorite things about being in Jacksonville! I also really enjoy hanging out with people my size...sooo basically kids much younger than myself....AND, I have a blast helping Natalie with the Crossfit kid's class each week!

Upcoming Adventure –This summer, my awesome Nana is taking me all over Italy for a month to see family before dental school consumes my life. I'm pretty excited about this, but I'm also unsure of how I feel about flying over the ocean for 10+ hours...so pray for safe travels! I'm also going to try and not eat pasta every day, because a month with an all-carb diet might not look flattering on my 5-foot-tall figure.

Some things you don't know about me - Hmmm, I'm pretty open about everything so this one is kinda hard! I like to sweeten my coffee with condensed milk..? Is that weird? The first time I ripped my hand from Crossfit, I showered with an oven mitten on because it hurt too much to put water on it. Also, my driver's license says I'm 5'10'. That can be problematic at times.

When did you start CrossFitting? I started 2 summers ago, but I think I've been cross fitting for about a year and a half because I always had to take breaks for soccer season.

Why did you join CHCF? I joined CHCF because I was getting bored of working out/running alone while I prepared for preseason. I was introduced to Crossfit and have loved it since!

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  -My thoughts after completing my first wod had to have been  something along the lines of: 'God I hope this gets easier'. But it doesnt ever get easier....you just learn to love the pain!

What is your favorite part about CrossFit? Hands down, the people! I pray that whatever box I join next has wonderful people just like Carriage House, because a I love it here. Shout out to Hannah Graham for being my first Crossfit friend/ teammate and being by my side for my first competition ever and for helping me find my car sticker ( I still don't know the correct term for it)! And of course, Casie Darnell for picking me up for Saturday morning wods when I didn't have a car! You two kept me coming to Crossfit and made me feel welcome! I could literally name every one of you for something special, but I'll save that for when I graduate because it would take a while!

What is your most memorable wod?  My most memorable wod would have to be from my last competition with Curt when we had to do double Grace. Even the memory is painful...but super rewarding! I don't think I've ever pushed myself harder, mentally. But it's those hard wods that I have done that make me proud!

What would you tell newbies?   I would tell newbies to not eat before working out...unless you want to taste your food twice! Make sure to use the bathroom before double unders and anything else that is strenuous such as TTB and deadlifts lol. But in all seriousness, never quit. Always be proud of your progress and remember that each day, you're better than you were yesterday.  


I like...my cat. His name is Eeyore. He scratches me sometimes but deep down, I know he loves me!
I eat....mainly healthy/clean foods, but I also like soul food...aka chocolate, fries, ice cream, etc...
I am...one out of four of the daughters that my parents have. My sisters are the best people ever, and people have thought that we are quadruplets.

Meet February's Athlete of the Month Nick Graham.   A dynamic coach with lots of energy and enthusiasm for coaching and competing.  He has been putting in extra    training time as he has some big goals.  We have lots of faith he will ge there!  Good Luck!  We have not doubt your hard work will take you far!

Hobbies –  I enjoy coaching and playing football, basketball, soccer, and just about anything that you keep score in.

Upcoming Adventure – Parenting – Hannah and I are going to be having our first child in June this year. I am super excited and a little nervous.

Some things you don't know about me -  I really enjoy singing in my car and I am probably singing 90 percent of the time especially when I am by myself. I am pretty good! I was a pole vaulter in High School and the highest I got in a meet was 12’9’’ the highest I ever jumped was 13’6’’.

When did you start CrossFitting? – I Started in May of 2013!

Why did you join CHCF?  My lovely and beautiful wife got me started. We happen to be looking for somewhere for us to workout at and Hannah being the amazing researcher that she is found Carriage House Crossfit and we have never looked back.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  - My first WOD was Helen but not the real Helen more like Ellen or just Len. I mean I was doing jumping pull-ups, Nat only let me run half the meters that the class was doing. I was swinging a 25 pound kettle bell and I was dying!!!! I was hooked!

What is your favorite part about CrossFit? Community and Competing – The first thing I love about Crossfit is the people especially at Carriage House. I don’t think everyone realizes how important all of you are to Hannah and I or how much we care about everyone at Carriage House. It truly is Family to me and a second home. The Second part is Competing. I think Ricky said this once, that he could tell something was missing after High school/college sports. I definitely would agree with him and Competing in Crossfit filled that thing that was missing. I strongly believe that competition is a major part of Crossfit. You cannot tell me nobody cares about what number or time goes up on that board. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the winning time, but you want your best time up on that board.

What is your most memorable wod?  I have had so many I feel like. I will never forget competing with Tod in the First D-Town Competition. All those WODs were fun and exciting. I will also never forget this last D-Town Competition going RX (Thanks Hannah and Lish for making the leap). During this last D-town comp. We had to do an obstacle course. It had snatches, tire flips, farmers carry, a hill, and a run to finish while keeping this sand bag with you. On that run I was dead and I remember telling Lish I cannot hold this bag anymore, it was on Curt’s back. I wanted to just stop right there and sit down, but Curt and Lish got me to that finish line. Also, Rick doing that Handstand walk WOD and Jumping off both of his hands and somehow getting us one more rep. That was pretty cool.

What would you tell newbies?  
1. Listen to your coaches!
2. Scaling is not to hold you back, it is way to get you to the point where you can RX it and so you can work again tomorrow.
3. It is like being a kid again you get to hang, jump, climb, throw, and swing….Enjoy it!

Meet Steve King athlete of the Month for Janurary.  He is many different things to different people in this gym,   Pete and I appreciate the Troll side of his character, work ethic , dependabilty and Master athleticism.  I wish my voice would project like his.  Athletes of all ages look up to him.  He is the wise, master that can still kick butt!   We are lucky to have him!

Occupation:     Firefighter for 16 years with the City of Jacksonville.

Hobbies –  Crossfit (my wife says that it’s an obsession), Scuba diving, Snow Skiing, Water Skiing and anything that keeps me moving.

Upcoming Adventure – In 2016…snow skiing at Keystone Colorado in Feb., and hopefully the Crossfit Games in July.  

Some things you don't know about me -  I have never had a broken bone (just jinxed myself) and as a kid I ate rat poison and drank kerosene.  My parents ran my grandfather’s grocery store and I would eat everything I could get my hands on (growing boy).

Why did you join CHCF?  Jolene talked Curt and I into trying it.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  -  I was lying on the ground thinking my arms are going to fall off (after doing 100 pull ups for time).  I have been hooked ever since.

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?  - The people, and to see how far I can push my body.

What is your most memorable wod?   - Any WOD that I beat the younger guys.  

What would you tell newbies?   - Give it time.  Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Meet December 2015's Athlete of the Month Stephanie Griffiths.  Stephanie is that quiet strong girl who sneaks up on you with her scores.  Always postitive, energetic and very generous!  Don't be misled by that pretty face, she is strong, driven and goes after challenges with a vengence.

Occupation-  I am a chiropractor who specializes in women's health, pregnancy, and pediatrics and a stay at home mom.

Hobbies – I love to read, cook, and travel.

Upcoming Adventure – Possibly a 10K in New Orleans with some good friends in March, and the ever changing adventure of being Beau's mom!

Some things you don't know about me - Before starting CrossFit, I taught kick boxing and women's self defense at Progressive Kenpo Karate.

When did you start CrossFitting? I started CrossFitting almost 3 and a half years ago.

Why did you join CHCF? I wanted to reach a better level of fitness.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  -  I was just happy I didn't pass out or throw up!

What is your most memorable wod?  I don't remember the name, but it was in the middle of August; I hadn't been a member of the box for very long. It was just Torri, Jo, and I and the WOD was burpees, toes to bar, and running.  I didn't think I would be able to finish but Torri and Jo hung in with me and encouraged me all the way! It's great to be part of such a wonderful community.

What would you tell newbies?

Meet November's Athlete of the Month Katie Carls.  She is a Killer RX athlete who manages to keep thing light and fun.  She has gained new skills every month with perseverence and patience. You always feel like you can be on her team.

Occupation-  Director of Campus Events at Illinois College.

Hobbies –  Besides Crossfit, I enjoy spending time with friends and family.  My sister had a baby recently so I'm completely obsessed with my niece.  

Upcoming Adventure – I will be heading back to Indy to work the Big 10 Football Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 5.

Some things you don't know about me -  
I am a Triopia High School and MacMurray College grad.  
I played basketball at Mac and was recently inducted into their Hall of Fame.  
I have a master's degree in sport management from Western Illinois University.  
I have worked for the PGA Tour, NCAA and Lucas Oil Stadium.  
I moved back to Jacksonville in June 2014 after living in Indianapolis for 5 1/2 years.
I have either attended or worked a Men's or Women's Final Four since 2009.
I had dinner with Pat Summitt, former head women's basketball coach at Tennessee.
I met former President Jimmy Carter when he was on IC's campus last October.

When did you start CrossFitting?  I started at CHCF in July 2014 and have loved every minute of it!

Why did you join CHCF?  I joined CHCF because of Robyn Maher.  I wasn't sure if I should join T3 or CHCF and she strongly encouraged me to start with CHCF.  It was the best advice she's ever given me :-)  I had done Crossfit in Indianapolis and was so relieved that Jacksonville had a box I could join.  Thanks Robyn!

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  -  My first WOD at CHCF involved Turkish Get-Ups which I had never done before.  I thought, ok this is interesting......I don't remember it being terrible, just something different.

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?  The people!  I wouldn't be where I am today if it were not for the coaches and athletes.  I love all the support and encouragement everyone has for each other.  I truly look forward to coming to class each day and have really enjoyed getting to reconnect with people from my Triopia days and meeting so many new people.  I always enjoy seeing other people meet one of their goals whether it's hitting a new PR or accomplishing a new skill.  I also like being challenged and Crossfit has allowed me to be competitive, stay fit and have fun.  

What is your most memorable wod?  My most memorable WOD  was Murph in May 2015.  I saw that WOD as a huge challenge and felt such a sense of accomplishment after completing it.  

What would you tell newbies?   I would tell newbies to keep showing up.  Even if you don't want to go, force yourself to go and you will be happy that you did.  Don't be afraid to ask questions about how to do things, how to modify a workout or what weights to use.  We have really good coaches and knowledgeable athletes so use them.  Also, get used to being sore, that's Crossfit.

Meet October's athlete of the month Kerris Osborn.  She is has been with us since the garage!  She is the one who helps keep the nooners enjoying the misery.  She works hard and still keeps things fun.  She is an awesome friend and neighbor!  We love having her around!

Some things you don't know about me - I can roll my tongue under on the sides (I'll have to show you), I have a brother that is 6 foot 7 inches tall, I have two cats, Buhla and Ella, precious angels, I went to Costa Rica for a week by myself 2 years ago, and I graduated from Routt and Mac Murray.  Worst speller, e.v.e.r.

When did you start CrossFitting?  It was 4 short years ago, I thought 2 days a week was hard then, HA!

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  - WOW, did that really happen?  It was a 7 minute amrap, wall balls is all I really remember, maybe air squats, hardest thing I had ever done, up till then.........

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?  The peeps/trainers/the morale!!  That there are different Wod's everyday, and the results.  

What is your most memorable wod?   There are two: Vera, I was not aware the wod was named after Pete's mother, I proceeded to talk very harshly about Vera, to Pete, after the wod.  And, BARBARA, I blacked out mostly during and after, so that sums that up.  And it wasn't a wod, but when I got my 5 pull ups in a row, one of the best feelings of accomplishment, EVER.

What would you tell newbies?   You should really come more than 2 days a week, take it from me!  The things you don't want to do in a work out because you may not be good at it, do it anyway, that is how you get better!

Some things you don't know about me -   I partially amputated my big toe while riding my bike in high school with my sandals on.  I might not be invited to the bike trail now!
During my not so healthy days, I won an ice cream eating contest at an ice cream shop. It was worth the head freeze.
Favorite quote? I will beat her.  I will train harder.  I will eat cleaner.  I know her weaknesses.  I know her strengths.  I've lost to her before.  But not this time.  She is going down.  I have the advantage because I know her well.  She is the Old Me.


When did you start CrossFitting?   I started in July of 2014 and haven't regretted it!

Why did you join CHCF?  -  I was going to classes at Fitness World and was getting bored with the same routine day in and day out.  Thank goodness Jolene stepped up and said it was time to come to this thing called 'The Box.'  

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  -  I really enjoyed my first WOD, it's just been the 350 WODS after that!

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?  -The people.  I still get intimidated so get nervous asking others for help.  The amazing thing, though, is that I don't have to ask for help very often because everyone is so eager and encouraging to step in.  I have had several people stop what they are doing to show me the correct form or to help me with my form with no hesitation.  I have met some great people and friends for life by joining CHCF.

What is your most memorable wod?   -All of the WODS are new to me so I get excited about the challenge in all of them.  I do like the WODS when I am able to get out of my comfort zone and lift with a higher weight.

What would you tell newbies?   -Don't give up!  Make crossfit a part of your daily schedule. I feel so out of routine if I don't make it to my noon class.  
I would also tell newbies that the soreness doesn't go away!

I like....to tell others proudly that I crossfit at CHCF.
I eat....clean 90% of the time during the week (still working on the weekend eating).
I am....slightly addicted to crossfit.  I check the WOD during the middle of the night and freak myself out and then can't go back to sleep.

Congratulations Elisha you are athlete of the Month for August!   I am so happy you are part of our community and its been such a pleasure to watch you develop into such a crazy, strong Barbell Betty!
 
Occupation:     I am currently the Assistant Manager of the Nichol’s Park Pool. During the school year, I was a Paraprofessional 1:1 Aide for a child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Yes, it was as interesting as it sounds.

Hobbies – My favorite hobby is sleeping, but CrossFit is a very close second. I also enjoy reading, as I tend to read about 1 book a week. Going to the farm and 4-wheeling/walking through the woods is great, along with target shooting, shooting clay birds, shooting the bow and arrows, etc. Also, this may be shocking, but I love scrapbooking.

Upcoming Adventure – I think the biggest “adventure” that is coming up is competing in the Rx division at D-town. Other than that, Craig and I are going to Nashville for New Year’s Eve again. (If anyone wants to join, feel free. It was a blast).

Some things you don't know about me -  
-Oh, boy.  Well, my favorite foods are strawberry pop-tarts and chocolate doughnuts. I could probably eat those for every meal, although that wouldn’t benefit my CrossFit lifestyle, so I limit those.
-Most of the scars I have are from my little brother, Patrick.
-I swam at Illinois College for 3 years and was blessed enough to win MVP all 3 years.
-I have an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences and plan on going back to school to be a psychiatrist.
-I went deer hunting for the first time last fall and actually really enjoyed it.

Favorite quote?  This is tough. I have one favorite quote, and several favorite Bible verses.
My favorite quote is, “People judge. If you can say you’ve never done so yourself, be righteous. If you can’t, forgive them.”
As for Bible verses, those are: Hebrews 13:5, Philippians 4:6, Jeremiah 29:11, and Joel 2:25.
There have been some rough patches in my short 23 years of life, but I find life to be much easier and much more enjoyable when I remember these.

When did you start CrossFitting?  I started CrossFitting in April of 2013 (although I wish I’d have started earlier).

Why did you join CHCF?  - I joined because of my dad. He came home one day super sweaty and disgusting and I asked where he had been. He went into this long story about this “awesome gym” his friend had told him about and told me I should try it because it would help me get stronger during the off-season for swimming. I reluctantly went in, as at that point in time, I hated sweating. However, I immediately felt welcomed and comfortable, and I now welcome the sweatiness that comes with CrossFit.

What were your thoughts after completing your first wod?  - I’m not sure I can remember exactly what my thoughts were, but it was probably something along the lines of, “Dad, what did you get me into?” and “Ew, I’m sweating, this is heavy, and I’m tired.”

What is your favorite part about CrossFit?  - Along with everyone else, I absolutely love the people in the gym. People who started out as acquaintances quickly became friends, and then became family (I’m gonna be cheesy here, but I’m also thankful that CrossFit brought Craig into my life, because he’s awesome). The atmosphere that our gym has is one of the best I’ve been in, ever. I also love the feelings of hard work and accomplishment. It’s an incredible feeling to realize what your body is capable of and being able to do things you never thought you could do. It also helps to have all of you wonderful people cheering right along for everyone’s accomplishments. I am truly blessed to have all of you in my life.

What is your most memorable wod?   - Oh, I have so many! When Alaina’s adrenaline kicks in and she does deadlifts like a mad woman and does over head squats that she never thought she could do, that’s pretty memorable. When Casie, Meredith, and Kelsey did the State Fair Competition, because I was so proud of them. My very first competition with Jolene and Torri by my side cheering me on the entire time while I fell below the suck line. Every time someone gets their pull-ups or muscle ups. I think the most memorable wods are the ones where people are doing things they never thought they could do. It’s amazing.

What would you tell newbies?   - I would tell newbies to just go for it. I get very anxious over a lot of things, but CrossFit has helped with that. The people in the gym are always willing to help. No one puts each other down and no one there has the “I’m better than you” attitude. If other people are there for the same reasons I am, they’re there to make themselves better people, whether that be getting stronger, increasing your self-confidence, or just trying something new and exciting. Carriage House is a place to gain all of these things, and you gain a lot of new family members whether you like it or not.

Some things you don't know about me - I was a personal trainer in Chicago for many years before moving back here.  I have completed 4 marathons and 1 tough mudder.  My favorite show is Amazing Race and my favorite movie is Shawshank Redemption.  One of my favorite toppings for pizza is Anchovies.

I started crossfit in October of 2011, back in the garage, and have been doing it every since except for a couple month hiatus in 2013.

I joined thanks to Kerris.  She was a server at Lonzos and would talk about crossfit.  I had never heard of it but it sounded like something I would really like.  Boy am I glad I listened.  I was pretty much hooked from day 1.  Natalie was great at explaining what the workouts were like and she got me through the first few without puking!

I would tell newbies to stick with it and don't worry about what others are doing.  I get my butt kicked every day but I keep coming back for more.

Meet June's athlete of the month, Craig Miller.  He consistantly comes in and pour out the day's stress through sweat and hard work.  Approachable, happy to give feedback, dependable competitor and nice to the newbies!  He leads by example!

Personal Information: I hail from the 'Pumpkin Capital of the World,' Morton, Illinois where I attended Morton High School (home of the Potter! http://www.mortonladypotters.com/images/boypotter.jpg) and played soccer and baseball. After high school, I attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where I received a Bachelor's degree in fine arts graduating in 2009. I was unemployed/self-employed for about 6 months and worked for Men's Wearhouse after that for 6 months before going back to school. I attended SIU in Carbondale and graduated in 2013 with my J.D. After the bar exam, I began working part time in Peoria, Illinois before securing employment here in Jacksonville!

Occupation:  I am an Assistant State's Attorney for Morgan County, Illinois. I mainly handle traffic matters and some misdemeanor cases.

Hobbies/Interests: Besides CrossFit, I enjoy traveling anywhere and everywhere. I studied in England for 6 months during my undergraduate career and traveled all over Europe. I also enjoy cooking, reading, drinking during the day(weekends of course), and watching movies/documentaries. I love to learn and am a bit of a nerd when it comes to video games (I will challenge anyone to Mario Kart 64).

Upcoming Adventure: Elisha and I are going to the north woods in Hayward and St. Germaine, Wisconsin the week of July 4. I plan on enjoying a relaxing time with family, the sun, and the water.

Some things you don’t know about me: I may have a lot. 'Ghost' is my favorite movie (Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi). I'm not sure why it's my favorite, but I think it has something to do with my parents owning the VHS when I was growing up and me watching it a lot. I'll watch it anytime it's on TV.

I've been to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, seen the Coliseum in Rome, toured Dachau in Germany, and walked the streets of Venice.

My middle name is Robert, after my dad.

I'm a Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys fan.

I love Star Wars. I once dressed up and waited in line to watch Episode 1.

I got a hit off a Major League Pitcher when I was in high school (he was in high school and currently plays for the Cleveland Indians).

Lasagna is my favorite food. It's just spaghetti flavored cake.

I have run a half-marathon and 3 tough mudders.

When did you start crossfitting: I started CrossFitting in the summer of 2011. During law school, I always saw people running down the strip in Carbondale. I thought 'what the heck are these people doing?' Admittedly, I was a little intimidated. At the door of the gym (CrossFit So ILL) there was a woman with a lot of tattoos yelling and clapping as people ran in and out of the gym doors. I thought it was some sort of military training. One of my friends, who lived in Knoxville, TN, told me what it was, that he liked it, and I should try it. So one day I built up enough courage to just walk in the door and ask 'what is this?' I've been CrossFitting ever since. I've been a member at CrossFit So ILL, CrossFit North Peoria, and now CHCF. Each one is a bit different in their own unique way, but all have great members and share the values of CrossFit.

Why did you join CHCF? While job hunting after law school, every place I applied I made sure to check and see where the nearest CrossFit Affiliate was. I would not have taken a job unless the city I worked had a CrossFit gym. The local affiliate in Jacksonville was CHCF so I sent a message to the e-mail on the website. Natalie replied and I met with her over my first lunch hour.

What were your thoughts after completing your first WOD?:  I can't remember my first WoD at CrossFit So ILL but I remember thinking, 'I just came off training for a half-marathon, I can do this!' I was very wrong and I remember wanting to give up half way through. I was on my hands and knees trying not to lose my lunch. I was sore for 3 days and didn't go back until my body said it was OK. I do remember the first lift I did though. We were back squatting and I dropped the bar off my back (135#). It was really hard for me back then to even do a few reps at 135#. A veteran CrossFitter, who was working in with me, gave me a look and said 'well, clean it back up there.' I looked at him with the look 'are you *** kidding me?' I look back at that moment now and smile.

One of first WoDs at CHCF was very difficult. I'm not sure if it was THE first WoD at CHCF, but it was the first week I joined. I did Open 14.5 and Natalie/Ricky were my judges. I had been commuting an hour and a half one way for two weeks and hadn't done a WoD, other than the other Open WoDs, for 3 weeks. I remember using many expletives and seeing the look on Ricky's face like 'who is this person.' My 'dark place' during WoDs likes to swear a lot. I can't do it at work so why not at the gym?

What is your favorite part of Crossfit? The People. The faces I see everyday when I walk into the gym. There are a myriad of reasons to workout and every individual has their own personal story and reason for joining, but each one of us is here to better ourselves. I have been a part of 3 different gyms now and the same values resonate through the air. The barbell does not discriminate, it treats everyone equally. To the barbell, everyone is the same. That is my favorite part. I love it.

What is your most memorable WOD? I have so many memorable WoDs. Most involve partner/team WoDs, competing head to head with another person, or competitions.

Maybe it's because it's so close in time, by my most memorable WoD is the AirDyne, Sit Up, Thruster WoD at the FitBodies Competition with Lish and Joe D. My legs were on fire and everyone was cheering. It sucked so good.
 
What advice would you give a newbie? Stick with it. I wish I would have started sooner. You will see a change. It will get better, not to be confused with easier, but it will get better. As stated above, I look back at Craig circa 2011 not being able to clean 135 back up to the rack and smile. If you asked me 4 years ago if I would be doing what I am doing now, I would have laughed in your face. You will get better physically and mentally. The gym is my solace; it can be yours too.

Meet Athlete of the month of May, Torri Tarrillion.   She is the best at turning wod misery into fun!!   How do you do that?

Personal Information: I live in Jacksonville, and have been married for 25 years to my husband Kevin. We have two children Justin (married to Cristen) and Haylee. We also have one adorable grandson that we cannot get enough of, 2 year old Jackson Charles, but we call him Jax.


Occupation: I am the Director of Finance and Jacksonville Site Manager with CSC, a third party insurance administrator located out by the golf course on Sandusky. I started with the company as an accountant in 1989, and have been there ever since. The Jacksonville office is now the largest in our division, and we continue to grow, expected to add about 125 people this summer.


Hobbies/Interests: Besides Crossfit, I enjoy running and biking, anything that involves hanging out with my friends and family. I also enjoy hanging around the pool on the weekends and am a sun worshiper. I read when my schedule permits and I am a shoe-aholic. I love to take vacations.


Upcoming Adventure: I am not sure this is what you had in mind, but Tod and I are taking our families to Disney over Christmas break.Taking a large group of kids to Disney is always an adventure. Kevin and I have plans to hike the Grand Canyon at some point in the near future to celebrate our 25th anniversary and his 50th birthday.


Something you don’t know about me: I have an irrational fear of dogs. I once threw my daughter in front of me when a strange dog approached  us on a walk. So I guess the 2nd thing you don't know about me is that I am not above sacrificing my children in the interest of my own safety . . . . .

For something serious, I am the Treasurer of the Mia Ware foundation, which was started in honor of my best friend from high school. We lost Mia to breast cancer when she was only 36 and I have missed her every single day since.

When did you start crossfitting: I started with the Carriage House in December 2010.


Why did you join CHCF? I had been running for several years prior to that, and my sister in law, Jill, insisted I give crossfit a try. I wanted no part of it at first, in fact, she tricked me into coming to the gym. As soon as I met Natalie, I found myself agreeing to an on boarding session and before I knew what was happening, I was coming twice a week which quickly went to every day. I could not stay away.


What were your thoughts after completing your first WOD?: I was in a daze after my first session. I could not even do sit ups without Natalie holding my feet. But even then I remember thinking . . .I want to be as good as everyone else. I was so impressed with the other athletes and wanted to keep up with them.


What is your favorite part of Crossfit? There are so many things. I love lifting heavy! I love the way it challenges me in a way that is so different from my job. And I love that it embodies the traits of perseverance and competitive spirit in a healthy way. But most of all I love the people! Saturday mornings in the gym are my favorite day, and also any day that I can talk trash or give someone crap. The Christmas parties are pretty awesome too . . .


What is your most memorable WOD? My most memorable WOD personally is Memorial Day 2011, when Peg, Nat, Pete and I did the Murph. I did ring rows for pullups and knee pushups, and it took me 65 minutes to complete. That was an awesome day. I also remember Jolene's first open WOD and watching her power snatch 75#; a workout with Ed, Elisha and Tod where we ran in the pouring rain; Michelle doing her first RX pull up workout while her hands bled; the first time we took teams to a competition; dancing on EMOTM with KO and KT; and every Saturday WOD with my sister. That's another thing that I love about Crossfit - each day is a pretty great day.
 
What advice would you give a newbie? Come to the gym and meet people. Be a joiner with all age groups and personalities. This is a gift and one of the best experiences you will have as long as you put in the time.

Meet April's Athlete of the Month, Ed Nelson.  He is that athlete that always cheering the rest of us on because he has smoked everyone  in the class.  It's okay because he is one of our hardest workers and is always so humble about his skills and giant engine.  We all like working out with you!  Enjoy reading more about him.

Personal Information:
I was born in Rushville, IL and currently reside in Jacksonville with my wife Kim, my kids Elisha, Patrick and Nick.  

Occupation:
Representative for ASP Enterprises- since everyone asks what we do, we work with engineers, designers and architects to educate them about products/ideas that meet requirements they are obligated to follow such as DOT, EPA, FHWA etc. We also sell and work with heavy highway/bridge contractors to obtain and install these products.

Hobbies/Interests:
For many years our main interest was spending time coaching/watching soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, volleyball, etc. with our children. Now that the kids are getting older I get to spend more time doing things outdoors; hunting, fishing, trapping, skiing, hiking, kayaking, trap shooting. I also enjoy spending time with my family, woodworking, reading, listening to music.

Upcoming Adventure:
My friend tells me I am going to learn to rock climb this summer in Wisconsin before we head to Colorado for more of the same. Then supposedly I am going to learn to ice climb! I am not sure I am interested in doing this but he has led me into other things in the past that I really ended up enjoying. I am also told we are doing a parachute jump this summer by one of my children- pray for me!

Something you don’t know about me:
Wow, so many, I met my wife in college because my roommate was trying to get her to date him. I was the 8 wheeler roller skating champion “back in the day”(trophy on my bedside table). I played on Routt’s  State Football Championship team before many members of the gym were born. I used to live in the same neighborhood as Kenny Nortons mom and would see him and Ken Norton, Jr. at the house for picnics. For some of you who are too young to know, he was heavy weight boxing champion of the world and the second person to ever defeat Muhammad Ali, I refused to drive Garth Brooks from Springfield to Jacksonville. I, and several softball teammates, sang Midnight Rider with a drunk Greg Allman at a hotel in Chicago. I married the love of my life!

When did you start crossfitting:
I believe it was December 2012

Why did you join CHCF?
I had joined T3 back in 2012 at the urging of my “rock climbing friend” mentioned above as a great way to get in shape for skiing. I enjoyed the workouts but I was quite a bit older than most people attending the gym. Greg May had been talking to me about CHCF and how much he enjoyed it and that they had several older athletes. So I switched and Greg quit coming to class at CHCF within two weeks of me signing up, true story. However, I have found CHCF to be the perfect “program” for me as I get bored with traditional workout programs and Crossfit challenges me on many levels. It also is an avenue for us “older athletes” to still be in a competitive environment.

What were your thoughts after completing your first WOD?:
I don’t really remember what my first WOD was called but it was some concoction of wall balls and  thrusters, seems like there was another movement but it really didn’t matter. My contempt for wall balls and thrusters was confirmed on that day and it follows me to this day.

What is your favorite part of Crossfit?
I don’t think there is any question that the friendships that I/we have made at CHCF. I am extremely thankful for all of my CH family but, the positive attitudes, confidence, encouragement, drive to succeed and lasting friendships that our kids have received from everyone at the gym is priceless. You would not believe all the positive changes Kim and I see in each of our kids since joining CHCF and I can’t thank each of you enough for allowing us to be a part of this wonderful group of people!

What is your most memorable WOD?
There are so many but my favorite WOD’s are ones that have absolutely nothing to do with me. Being present when Michelle, Hannah and Marybeth each got their pullups! Kim completing her first RX workout, partnering with Liz and seeing her push harder than she thought possible on Murph! Watching Beth W exceed her “limit” on power cleans, Big Joe getting his muscle ups, having Natalie show us something new that we need to work on and then Jamie does it on the first try- there are so many more but watching/cheering for someone to achieve something they didn’t think they could do is the best WOD for me!

What advice would you give a newbie?
This may be the best opportunity you have ever been given. If you are serious about improving your life, not just your physical appearance you need to do three things 1) commit to it  2)sign up 3)show up. That’s it, the rest will work itself out.

Meet athlete of the month Beth Brockschmidt.  She is an example of rock steady commintment that everyone needs to make a change in their lives. We all seem to have similar reasons for coming, this is your chance to learn a little more about Beth.

Occupation: Principal at Turner Junior HIgh School

Hobbies/Interests: My husband, Travis, and I have three sons (17, 15, and 10).  I spend much of my time at football games, cross country and tennis meets and basketball games.  Other than that, CHCF is my other interest--and a great outlet for work stress.

Upcoming Adventure: I'll be sending my first kid to college in the fall--Yikes!

Something You Don't Know About Me: Pete Lira was my boss 23 years ago when I worked as a lifeguard at the Country Club pool.

When Did You Start Crossfitting? I joined at the original 'garage site' in March 2010.

Why Did You Join CHCF? I had lost about 30 pounds in the 6 months before, and I wanted to find a way to keep it off!

What Were Your Thoughts After Completing Your First WOD? My thoughts were then what they often are now: I wish I'd discovered this when I was 23, not 43.

What Is Your Favorite Part of CrossFit? I love the variety in the WODs and the fabulous folks in the early am classes.  And when I am there, it is among the few times during the day when I can forget about school!

How Has CrossFit Changed Your Life?  I truly have a higher fitness level and better  overall health now than 20 years ago.

What Is Your Most Memorable WOD?  My most memorable WOD will be when I finally can post an Rx result--I keep getting closer to this!

What Benchmark WOD Is Your Nemesis?  Geez.  I sigh every time I see a benchmark WOD posted.  But I'll give any of them a try.

Meet Athlete of the Month of February, Meredith Durall

Personal Information:
I was born at Scott AFB and raised in Belleville, Illinois.  I currently live in Jacksonville with my partner Michelle Thomas and our two dogs, Daisy and Rufus.  My dad and step-mother live in Kansas City, Missouri.  I have one younger sister, who lives in Portland, OR and two step-brothers.  One also in KC and the other in St. Charles, MO.  My mother died in 2007.

Occupation:
I work as a Registered Medical Assistant with Dr. Kari Senica at The Orthopedic Center of Illinois.  Prior to joining her in private practice, I worked in orthopedic medicine at Memorial Medical Center for about 5 years.  I haven’t always worked in the medical field.  I have also worked as a loan officer, personal banker, grocery store cashier, bartender, coffee shop barista, lifeguard, administrative assistant, and short order cook.

Hobbies/Interests:
I spend a great deal of my free time pursuing roles in local theater productions.  I enjoy performing in both dramatic and musical theater.  I also enjoy vocal performance.  While I used to tease that I was just a wedding and funeral performer, I now sing with Kapello, a local acapella performance group.  When I’m not working on stage, or behind the scenes, I also love cooking and collecting cook books.

Upcoming Adventure:
Michelle and I are getting married this fall.  Our entire relationship has been an adventure really.  Our wedding day is simply the next chapter of the ever evolving story of our lives.

When Did You Start Crossfitting?
July 2013

Why Did You Join CHCF?
I wanted to try crossfit after I watched the 2012 CrossFit Games on ESPN.  I google searched CrossFit and took a look at the mainsite.  Michelle mentioned something about it to Joe Darnell at work.  He told her we should come try it out at Carriage House.  I was terrified to try it, but I was so inspired by what I had seen on tv.  When we walked into the box and it immediately felt like home.  We knew we were in the right place with the right people.  

The other compelling reason for me to join was driven by the death of my mother.  She died in 2007 of a subdural hemorrhage, secondary to being on Coumadin.  She was overweight, had a long history of back pain and dependency on narcotic pain medication.  She developed disuse osteoporosis that lead to insufficiency fractures of her foot and pelvis.  Immobilization for one of these fractures, coupled with her history of blood clots, meant she had to take the blood thinner Coumadin.  At 57 years old she suffered another fall, and subsequent brain bleed that lead to her death.  My mother was an amazing, intelligent, talented woman.  Her life was cut short because she failed to care for herself.  I was bound and determined not to end up like her.  I was then, and am now, willing to fight for my life.  I’m not trying to be skinny, or look great in a swim suit.  Every single WOD I finish is dedicated to giving myself a fighting chance at the long and happy life my mother didn’t get to have.  

What Were Your Thoughts After Completing Your First WOD?
I actually thought the warm-up was the WOD.  Not kidding.  Then we did a WOD with push press and kettle bells (I think).  After the WOD was over I cried.  Sobbed actually.  Not in the box in front of anyone of course, but in the Jeep afterwards.  I was so humbled, felt so out of shape, and ashamed.  In that same moment, however, I felt more determined than ever to never feel that way again.  I knew that CrossFit was the answer to my prayers and that I needed CHCF to turn my life around.

What Is Your Favorite Part of CrossFit?
The people!  Hands down, the relationships I have established and the family I have formed here is the greatest blessing in my life.  As I have traveled to other boxes to judge competitions or just drop-in, I am reminded how truly exceptional my home box is.  I take pride in knowing that we strive to create a friendly, competitive atmosphere that places emphasis on the integrity of our athletes.

How Has CrossFit Changed Your Life?
If you would like the unabridged answer to this question, meet me for coffee.  The abridged answer is immensely, in all aspects, both seen and unseen.  I liken my CrossFit transformation to a crucible process.  It has not been easy.  It has been transformative.  I am still learning, growing and changing.  

What Is Your Most Memorable WOD?
The Don.  If you’re not familiar, look it up.  It was the first Saturday Team WOD I did at 7AM.  Jolene and Jamie were my teammates.  I was terrified I would let them down, that I wasn’t good enough to be on their team.  I worked my a$$ off for over 20 minutes.  When it was over, I felt invincible.  They were the best teammates/cheerleaders I had ever had.

What Benchmark WOD Is Your Nemesis?
Angie, I’m not efficient enough to manage 100 pull-ups yet.  Even when I get there, that WOD is just cruel.

What Advice Would You Give A Newbie?
Honor your commitment to yourself and show up!  Had a bad day at work?  WOD.  Mad at your significant other?  WOD.  Nervous about an upcoming test?  WOD.  You will find there are a hundred different reasons on any given day to NOT show up.  Your job is to shove all of those to the side and get in there!  It’s true, the hardest thing you will do is take that initial step inside the door at the box.  Especially show up on a Saturday.  Remember my Saturday experience?  Amazing things happen in the box people, you must be present to win.

Meet Athlete of the Month Amber Duncan.

Tell us something about yourself.
I live in Jacksonville with my loving supportive sister Jayme.  In October I got engaged to Ryan, who is currently living and working in Arizona (he is moving back in May).  We are planning a July 4th wedding.  I graduated from Millikin University in Decatur in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.  I am one of three 1st grade teacher at Brown County Elementary School and the High School Girls Volleyball Head Coach.  I have recently been accepted into the Graduate program for Reading Specialists at Western Illinois and will begin my first class in January.
 
What were you doing before Carriage House CrossFit?
Before I started Crossfit I was working out at Anytime fitness (trying to watch others and see what they did to teach myself something that might help me).  Thanks to Zach Samples for continues pressure to just give Crossfit a shot (glad I did), here I am!!!

Your proudest accomplishment is:
I would have to say that my proudest accomplishment would be finally RX’ing a WOD!!  Shows me that the hard work put in every morning really is paying off.

What is your long term goal?
To maintain a healthy, active life.  I want to someday become efficient enough in the skills of crossfitting to compete in a competition.  

What is the biggest change you have noticed about yourself?
My LEGS!!!!  I went to put on a pair of pants the other day and I couldn’t get my thighs in them.  I know its muscle, so I’m not too upset about having to go up a pant size, but really does show me that I am gaining muscle.  Plus, when we do lifts and I get to go up in weight that’s a pretty exciting change.

Most memorable WOD:
Pete’s crazy squat challenge WOD. The overhead squat for a minute, then rest, front squat for a minute, then rest, back squat for a minute, then rest.  OH, then repeat!!  I remember this one so well, maybe because we did it two months in a row OR…… because I literally could NOT walk down the stairs at school for 2 days after this WOD.  You walk in, look at the board and think to yourself, this won’t be too bad: 6 minutes and low weight.  Sadly Mistaken!!

Which bench mark WOD is your nemesis?
Angie: Anything in that volume and with push-ups and pulls up is a NO GO for me.  Those two movements alone will crush me.  Fran is a close second!

I have really weird finger prints.  I have been to the sheriff’s department 3 times now trying to get my finger prints taken for my teaching license to be renewed.  YES, this is mandatory!  They have informed me every time I’ve been in that they have never had this problem before.  When they go to take my prints, they have to scan the set of four fingers first and then they have to roll the individual finger to make a match and prove it is me.  WELL, my finger prints don’t match!!  So, at this point I am just a very odd person and have still not figured out what we will do to show proof that I am who I say I am.

Advice you would give to a newbie.
Give it a try!  That was what someone once told me and it was the greatest thing I have ever done.  You don’t have to be the best at performing each task.  I have been at this for 6 months and as soon as I think I have figured something out, then there is a whole new task at hand.  It’s always something new and exciting and you will never get bored with it.  Every time you see something on the board that looks intimidating just make a goal for YOURSELF and try to achieve it. Plus, the amazing people you will meet along the way is all worth it.

Meet Athlete of the Month Stacy Lemon.  

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.
My husband Bob and I live in Jacksonville. We have two kids, Micca who is married to Troy Donohoo, and lives in Springfield, and Brock who is in North Dakota. My mother lives in Waverly, as does my brother Brad and his wife Monica, and I have one sister Anita who lives here in town. I ran a clothing store 25 years ago for almost 11 1/2 years, until I got pregnant with my son, and decided to be a stay at home mom for awhile.

Occupation?
I work at Four Rivers as an Early Childhood Developmental screener. We screen children ages 2 1/2 to 5, love being around them, they keep you smiling for sure!! I really enjoy working with the children, and love being able to help the ones who need extra help maybe with speech or whatever they need.

Hobbies/Interests:
I love anything that keeps you moving. Love shopping, riding my bike, swimming, spinning, I also enjoy baking, Keeping up with my friends on FB, looking and getting ideas from Pinterst. Love spending time with my family, CHCF family and friends!

Tell us something we don't know about you.
I was in a police line-up years ago for a robbery that was committed in Jacksonville😬 they needed several tall blondes with long hair, so I was asked by the police dept to be in the line-up. Not sure if the lady who was robbed picked the right blonde, but I picked her out in a heartbeat👍 not sure if that whole thing was a compliment or what???😬😬🙈🙈 would love to know if they still have my mug shot?? Lol!!  What an experience that was!!

When did you start CrossFitting?
October 2012

Main reason for joining CHCF?  
I had been exercising regularly at the Y, but had become bored with my routine and wanted a bigger challenge. Wow!! Like they say be careful what you wish for!! But, I love love love our CHCF!!  New challenge everyday, it's the BEST!!

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?
Not sure?? All I really remember is Natalie telling me I hadn't died yet!!! LOL!!! Love you Nat!!death by wallballs

What's your favorite part of CrossFit?
I love the challenges of each WOD!  I love how we all sweat together, work hard together, encourage one another!! I love seeing everyone in the gym hitting their PR's and getting stronger! I love the comradery we have at CHCF!! I love our trainers and everyone here!! So I guess by now, you know I Love it all!!

How has CHCF changed your life?
It has made me a stronger person in more ways than one. I have never done a handstand in my life, but I finally can do one against the wall. I'm more flexible and mobile. My overall health is better, I have more energy.( not just from pre- WOD, as I know some may be thinking, but hey -gotta say it's good too) plus I have met some of the most amazing people you'll ever meet, right here in our box. I wish I could have only started CHCF at a younger part of my life, but I'm so thankful to have met all of you, and have you all in my life now!

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?
The best results are my mobility and strength is so much better.  When I went to see my Rheumatologist he  compliments me on how well I'm doing, and recently took me down on one of my prescriptions to every other day. He says he is inspired to join Crossfit, and he knows I feel the best I have in years! That man has definitely seen me at my worst.

What are your future training goals?
My goal is to keep moving, staying healthy and to keep training at CHCF with all our awesome trainers!  There are no limits on what you can do at any age. Never to late to get going!

What is your favorite workout?
Love love our Saturday wods!! The swim WOD this past summer was awesome too!! Love group wods!!

What is your LEAST favorite workout?
OHS-that's a big goat!

What is your most memorable workout?  
I have a lot of memorable workouts! Getting my pull-ups was pretty neat! One of my favorite moments was when we were at D'town throwdown, and with just seconds left Pete finished his progressive cleans and threw on the next weight so Tod was able to jump in and finish the last one- that was one of the most awesome moments to see those two hug after that amazing finish! Priceless!!

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit? Hang in there with it!!  You are going to LOVE it!!  You can always modify and we have the absolute best trainers that will help you on your journey!! You are never to old to start- you can do this!!

Meet Athlete of the month Kaila Freeman.


Tell us a little bit about you and your family.  I live south of Woodson with my husband and daughter.  I am 27.  Jacob and I have been married for over four years.  Jacob sells Pioneer Seeds and farms corn and beans with his Dad.  Our daughter is named Alaina.  She is 19 months old.  She is a busy toddler learning new words and skills every day.  Jacob and I graduated from Western Illinois University in '08 and '09.

Occupation? I am currently a busy stay at home mom to Alaina and I am a professional farmer's wife to Jacob.  Previously, I worked for Cargill Inc. where I did grain purchasing and grain accounting for 5 years.

Hobbies/Interests:  I enjoy golfing. I enjoy helping on the farm.  Playing outside with my daughter.  Shopping with my sister in-laws and mother in-law. Jacob and I are very involved in the Cass-Morgan county Farm Bureau Young Leaders group. I enjoy teaching youngsters about farm safety.

Recent adventure you’re planning.  I'm headed to Florida with Jacob's Mom (Sue Freeman) and Sisters (Melissa Saxer and Jessica Richardson) the first weekend of November. Wish me luck! ( First long weekend leaving Jacob and Alaina.)

Tell us something we don’t know about you.  Alaina was born 5 weeks early. I went in to labor on Palm Sunday of 2013.  One of the biggest snow storms recently.  She was 19 inches long and we received 19 inches of snow that day.  So, it was basically Jacob and I alone at the hospital b/c no one could get to us and we weren't going anywhere.

When did you start CrossFitting? June, 2014

Main reason for joining CHCF? My physical fitness and mental fitness. My body has not been the same since I had Alaina, March of 2013.  Then, Jacob had a farming accident in May of 2014.  He lost most of his right hand. He still has his thumb and part of his palm.   I was mentally and physically exhausted from his 12 days in the hospital, 4 surgeries, and many doctor appointments.  All while trying to keep a normal life for our at the time 13 month old.  I needed to focus on myself for at least 1 hour a day.  Now, I'm hooked.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout? I can do this! I need to do this!

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit? The awesome people.  Love hanging out with 6 am crew and the coaches.  

How has CHCF changed your life?  I am more happy, healthy, and confident. (This sounds so generic, but it is the truth.)

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF? I am more strong!  I never would have guessed that my body can do some of the things I have done.

What are your future training goals? I would like to continue learning, gaining more flexibility, and getting more strong. Eventually, I would like to help coach.    

What is your favorite workout? I like kettle bell WODs. Also, I like the accomplished feeling I have when we have a G-Day.  When I look at the wod and think I won't be able to do any of the task.  Then, I do....normally, with assistance:)

What is your LEAST favorite workout?  Overhead squat, but I am getting better.  

What is your most memorable workout with CHCF? I am still learning and getting better everyday.  I feel like screaming 'Yay!' every time I get an Rx. I was pretty excited about getting my banded pull-up recently.    

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit? Stick with it.  You will have great results. Throw your scale away. You are gaining muscle.

Meet  Athlete of The Month for October, Bob Collings.  A perfect example of a Crossfitter who understands how important it is to keep moving.
 
My wife Terri and I have been married 37 years next month, Nov 12th.  We have three children, and two dogs.  We have lived in Jacksonville since Aug of 1978 when we moved here so I could take a teaching position at Armstrong Jr. Hi.  I was hired as a shop teacher, girls basketball/volleyball coach.
    I am now a semi retired school teacher.  I still teach but only for Lincoln Land Community College here in Jacksonville.  I started and developed the construction program for LLCC in jacksonville.  We remodel houses, help elderly folks out doing repair work for them and help some churches that are on a limited financial basis.  
    I have several hobbies and interests.  I do woodworking/woodcarving, I bike, golf, deer hunt, oil and acrylic painting, my son and I have just started trout fishing.
    Probably my most favorite quote is ' A body at rest tends to stay at rest but a body in motion tends to stay in motion',  Keep moving!
    My next adventure is with my son.  We are heading for Montauk State Park in Missouri.  We plan to camp and trout fish Columbus Day Weekend. I haven't camp since 1996.  I hope it's warm and dry that weekend.
    Most people probably don't know that I grew up in Northern Missouri in a town of 350 residents  My high school graduating class had 18 students in it.  Before I tell people the size of my graduating class I tell them I was in the top 10 of the class.
     My daughter Katie kept talking about Cross Fit and how much she liked it and I should try it.  I think Jolene's name was mentioned a few times.  So my wife  and I tried it in Aug of 2012.  I've always have been one to compete in team sports or work out so here I am 2 years later still  Cross fitting.  At that time the doctors told me that I needed to have my left knee replaced.  I haven't replaced it yet.    
    My main reason I joined was to loose weight and get fitter. I was a member of the health club and was doing a lot of weight lifting. We all know what happens when you do a lot of lifting.  We get bigger.
    After my first workout I thought Holy Cow what have I got my self into?
I not a quitter so I continued with it.. I worked through the sore muscles and all.  Sore muscle are a good sore.  
    I have several parts of cross fit I like.  The feeling of finishing a WOD.  The energy I receive from all the other athletes that are working out.  Being able to work out with some of my former students and seeing the adults they have become.  The learning of what my body can do.  Changing my eating habits.
    When I retired several retired people advised me to plan something to do everyday.  So along with my other activities I plan crossfit 2-3 times a week.  I check the WOD every morning even if I'm not doing the WOD.  I want to know whats going on.
    Since I started my clothes fit better and some I have taken out of my closet because they are to big. Crossfit has made me change how I eat and think about food.
    I plan on continuing cross fit.  Specific goals are to dead lift #300 and back squat #300.  These two work outs will keep my legs and back strong for the biking I do.
    I like the WODs that are 12-15 minutes in length.  Sometimes the shorter ones leave me needing a little more.  So I have started working on my lifting skills after the WODs if there is time.  I struggled with burpees for a long time and didn't like the workout with them in it but now burpees are ok and any workout with bear crawls in it I struggle with. If I could I would do the Saturday partner WOD.  Those are the most fun.
    My advice for a new cross fitter would be to start out slow and easy.  You will have sore muscles at first but its a good sore. Don't try to keep up with other athletes.  Your strength, stamina, and skills will improve as you workout each time.  Set a schedule and try to keep it.
    I like the way I feel after each workout.
    I eat a lot less bread, pastas, sweets.
    I am 62 years old and loving it.  
    I do some form of exercise every day.
   








Meet Athlete of the Month for September, Jamie Headen.


Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

I'm 37, I live south of Lynnville at the far west end of Old Airport Road with my lovely wife Katie and sons Tyler (age 10) and Ryan (age 5).  I attended college at SIUC and Katie attended Illinois College and is a 3rd grade teacher at South School.  The boys got to school at Eisenhower Elementary school.

Occupation?
Civil Engineer and Vice President of Benton & Associates, Inc. here in Jacksonville.  I've worked at B & A since 1994 when I was 17.  Put up hay, worked at the meat locker, and mowed yards before that.

Hobbies/Interests
I like to play softball, bowhunt, Crossfit, eat.   I used to have a few more hobbies but who has the time these days.

Words to live by or Favorite Quote?
I don't think I really have a favorite quote or words to live by.  I know, that sounds boring and lifeless but I think I'm just too lazy to remember one and then actually put it to use.   I like funny movie quotes but I can't seem to get those right either (just ask David).  I also like Clint Eastwood movie quotes.  You know, deep emotional stuff like that.

Recent adventure you’re planning.
I might be a little light in the adventure department.  As the boys get older, I think our adventure planning will get better but nothing on the books for now.  I'm in charge of getting the boys to school everyday, that's always an adventure I guess.


Tell us something we don’t know about you.
I can play the banjo, although not as well as I would like.  I once had the side view mirror of my truck smashed by an oncoming truck who threw a Dairy Queen Blizzard at me.  I think squirrel gravy is one of life's little treats many people never experience.  I'm also a licensed water, sewer, and swimming pool operator (whatever that means, right?)   I usually eat 5 - 6 eggs every morning for breakfast in omelet format.  I don't always drink beer.......but when I do,...............


When did you start CrossFitting?
Middle of July 2013

Main reason for joining CHCF?
I joined CHCF because I was looking for a way to stay in better shape for the long term and bored with weight training by myself.


What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?
How out of shape I actually was and I didn't realize it.  My lungs burned like fire but I finally felt like I accomplished something during a workout.  I like team sports and knew this was perfect for me.


What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
My favorite part about Crossfit is the constant challenge it presents.   Growing up, we were always competing  to see who can throw a rock the farthest, run the fastest, jump the fence, shoot the best, issue the best atomic wedgie to your friends, etc. and this kind of extends that base level of competition.  At the same time though, we compete all day, every day, in our jobs and Crossfit also allows me to show up and just do the workout without having to worry about competing by just working on form and skills.  It seems weird but after bossing people around all day, I'm kind of ready to just take orders sometimes.  Crossfit also keeps my stress at a manageable level and helps me sleep better at night.  I used to think stress was a made up thing, but that was before I had any of it.  Now I understand it better and how to keep it from getting to me, and Crossfit is one of those tools that keeps me stay level.

I also really like watching people achieve new goals as the result of hard work.  Its great to see all ages and skill levels set new personal records in areas they didn't think were possible.  For example, when Kim got her first Rx and everybody lined up to congratulate her when she was done, that was really neat.  I'm not sure you can find that anywhere else.  I also think its a function of the great people in our gym too.


How has CHCF changed your life?
Crossfit has helped me to change my diet to be more consistently healthy.  It has been the key to maintaining a manageable level of stress for me in the past year.


What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?
Improved flexibility and general fitness level.  I really like the challenge of Olympic Lifting and the skill it requires.  Crossfit has also helped me maintain my sprinting speed which I thought would be fading fast by now.



What are your future training goals?
Improve my cardio and Olympic lifting.  I have always struggled with breathing during long efforts and I need to continue to work through those sticking points.  Now that Olympic lifting is finally making more sense to me and I am more flexible, I would like to focus on the lifts a little more and set some new PR's in the next year.

What is your favorite workout?
Anything that requires a lot of different skills and body movements.  High rep workouts with only one or two movements are just grinding to me mentally and aren't as interesting.  I think my favorite workouts though are when there are a lot of people in the gym that day that really push me.  When Joe and Zack are there, I know I'm up against a couple government mules who can break a rower in half and lift a ton, when Curt is there I know we can lift together but there's no way I'll catch him if cardio or high reps are involved.  Ed always makes me laugh when he gripes about the running and then beats me by two minutes in the WOD, I wish I had your cardio Ed.  When Steve, Nick, and Ricky are in, ............ok, I know there is no chance in hell of catching those guys.......moving on.    Craig always lifts with me and provides that push when I don't feel like it, some days he wins, some days I win.  David and Brady are like family so its just fun to hang out and work out with them.  Jeff always give me a thumbs up, every workout, never misses a one.  I've left out  a lot of names but everybody at CHCF makes the workouts worth it.   I always like it when Pete and Natalie are around, they brought us into our Crossfit world and there's just something that feels right when they're in the gym.

I guess the moral of the story is, my favorite workout is ANY workout, as long as my friends are there.

What is your LEAST favorite workout?
Anything with a row and ab work for some reason.  I don't know why but the rower kicks my butt.  Well,....I guess I know why, because I don't work it like I should and the same goes for ab work.  I've always hated the ab work.


What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?
I'm really bad about remembering workouts, I can barely remember my gym bag or to pay Natalie on time (Sorry Nat) .  I guess I liked the Murph we did on Memorial Day.  There were so many people working at one time, you could barely get around the gym.  What I remember the best though is Ed Nelson working with someone (I don't remember who) at their pace rather than going at his blazing speed.  He could have killed that thing but instead worked with someone else to cheer them on and keep them focused.  That's memorable to me.


What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?
Listen to Pete and Natalie and the other coaches and do what they tell you.  Check your meathead ego at the door every day (for the guys) and you'll do great.  This isn't weightlifting or powerlifting, it's Crossfit.  Just let the workouts come to you and after awhile, you'll know when to do extra, or lift more, or go heavy that day.   But until then, take advantage of the great coaches we have here, work hard, and let it happen.  And for the older lifters especially, eat properly and time your meals for maximum recovery.  I struggled with this at first but once I got it worked out, each workout day was much more enjoyable.

And most of all, have a lot of fun.  At CHCF, you're surrounded by people who only want you to succeed.  So be cheered on, cheer others on, and have a great time doing it.

Meet Athlete of the Month for August, Hannah Graham.


Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

-I am married to a wonderful man named Nick, I don’t know if you have met him or not. We are getting ready to celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary on Wednesday. We have been together for around 8 years and he is the light in my life. We have 2 puppies, Pippa and Nora, who are really funny and bring us lots of joy. We are blessed to be surrounded by a wonderful family that includes new crossfiters, Mona and Rick, my parents, and Ron and Jennifer, my wonderful in-laws. I have two older sisters, Sarah, who is married with 2 kids and Rachel, who is deceased. Nick has three brothers, Nate, Wes, and Grant, which all treat me like a sister, so I guess that’s good? lol We are also lucky enough to have so many wonderful friends that are like family.

Occupation?
- Wedding Planner. I own my event planning company called Plan Events and Design that I opened about 3 years ago. We do mostly weddings and corporate events, and I love every minute of it. I also help out at my families company doing book keeping.

Hobbies/Interests
-There are so many. I love knitting, letterpress, reading, sewing, upholstery, painting, interior design, cooking, and getting lost on the internet.

Recent adventure you’re planning.
-I would say the next adventure would be a rock climbing trip. We are also planning a trip to Arizona in the winter.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
-I am strangely good at reading backwards and figuring out plots to movies I haven’t seen. It’s a weird gift but I’ll take it.

When did you start CrossFitting?
-I joined in May of 2013 and haven’t looked back.

Main reason for joining CHCF?
-I wanted to get into better shape and find a workout program that I could do with my husband that we could both enjoy.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?
-Well I did a lot of research prior to our first day so when Nat said it’s a 12 min workout I wasn’t surprised. However, Nick was shocked we were only working out for 12 minutes. After the wod, he said he hoped the workouts would be longer and I thought you have no idea what I have dragged you into!

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
-New Shoes...just kidding. Hands down, the people I have met. I get pretty emotional when I think about not having these amazing people in my life. I could write a page just about how much they all mean to me. My sister always refers to her friends as “The people you get to spend you life with” And the people at Carriage House are the people I want to spend my life with.


How has CHCF changed your life?
-I feel like I am a more balanced person now. I really care about what I am putting into my body and pushing myself in the gym, which in turn allows me to push myself in other areas of my life like my business and relationships. I also love that it is something I get to share with my husband and that we are on this adventure together. It has made me appreciate what we are both capable of and it had brought us closer.  I also feel like it has made me more confident. I tend to be a very self-coincidence person and while I still struggle with that I feel much at peace with myself.  

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?
-Weight loss, more energy, clearer head, muscle tone, the list could go on and on.

What are your future training goals?
-I would love to place top 5 in a competition! That’s a big goal. Another is clean and jerking 155 and getting my double unders down.  

What is your favorite workout?
-Anything with cleans or recently pull-ups. I also really love the Saturday wods and anything we do as a team.  

What is your LEAST favorite workout?
-Anything with deadlift, I can’t figure out why, it’s just not my thing!

What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?
-There are so many. D-town last year was really special. Seeing Alaina come out of nowhere and rocking that deadlift is something I will always remember. Also watching Nick, Curt and Steve win that competition was awesome. The day I got my pull-ups was great too. It was just Nat and Ed in the box but they cheered like I just won the crossfit games. Honestly, everyday brings some new victory, whether it’s for me or someone else. I love being part of those moments and getting to share in celebrating when someone does something they never thought possible.


What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?
-Commit whole-heartedly for one month. After that it’s a lifestyle you won’t want to change.

Meet Athlete of the Month for July, Casie Darnell


Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

I was born and raised in New Lenox, Illinois.  My mom, Carol, is Czechoslovakian, my Dad, Mike, is Mexican… my mom calls me a “Czech Mex”.  I have two step-parents, “Chuckster” and Angie.  I have an older sister, Erin, and two older step-sisters, Amanda and Krystal.  
I went to Northern Illinois University to study “old folks”.  I met my husband and best friend, Joe, on my first day of college (he was my dorm neighbor).  I had a crush on him almost instantly, but we didn't start dating until after college.
Joe and I married on November 2, 2013.  We have a zoo at home… two dogs, Hank and Clinton (also known as, Bill, George W. and Basement Crapper) and a cat, Boozer (named after Carlosl).

Occupation?
I work as a Program Director for a Memory Care in Springfield, Illinois.  I like to think of myself as a clown for old folks. I love working with the elderly, and I love working with people who have dementia.

Hobbies/Interests?
(In no particular order…) Reading menus and food labels, looking up random things online, watching the same awful movies over and over, listening to oldies and 90’s music, reading, watching the food network channel, trying new craft beers, coffee!, The Beatles, The Chicago Bulls, praying, spending time with family and friends. If you can’t tell, I’m a regular ball of fire.

Joe and I talk about traveling all of the time.   At the top of the list of possible destinations…I would like to revisit Nashville, TN to try the infamous fried bologna sandwich. (Joe would probably say going to Mexico).

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
Some random facts…  
My grandma recently passed, but I have talked to my grandparents almost every single day since I learned how to talk.
I hate ketchup.
I oddly love the smell of skunk.
I was a vegetarian for about eight years.  On Christmas, I would treat myself to a Quarter Pounder from McDonalds.
I’m a very picky meat eater, but Joe says I like all of the “disgusting meats” like bologna and hot dogs.
I was in colorguard/marching band in high school...  The best part about being in band was that it got me out of gym class.

When did you start CrossFitting?
March 2014

Main reason for joining CHCF?
Joe introduced me to CrossFit when he joined Carriage House in November of 2012.  I had no desire to join until I started attending his competitions.  At the competition in Decatur, Illinois, there were two women that were competing (and killing it!) that were pregnant.  Talk about a reality check!   I became very interested in making some lifestyle changes after witnessing that event.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?
I do not really remember what exactly my first WOD was, but I do remember thinking that I would have liked to have done CrossFit as a little kid. Squats, handstands, jump rope, climbing the rope, etc... they all seemed 'easy' as a child.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
My favorite part of CrossFit, by far, is watching everyone grow.  I love watching our athletes accomplish things that they couldn't do a month ago, a week ago, yesterday, etc.  I love that I get to experience someone’s personal best with them.

How has CHCF changed your life?
CrossFit has changed my life in so many positive ways…I have made new friendships with some of the most genuine people I have ever met in my life.  I have changed my diet, and have a new appreciation for food and the way that I treat my body.  I have a new attitude about what it means to try hard and to work for something that you care about.  Most importantly, I am aware that CrossFit is both a blessing from God and a luxury, it has simply made me aware of how blessed I am.

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?
(At the top of the list…) Because CrossFit has taught me proper lifting technique and helped me gain muscle and strength that I did not have before, lifting my residents at work is no longer straining.

What are your future training goals?
Right now, Meredith, Kelsey and I are working to compete in the State Fair competition... Team 'Strawbooty Shortcake'. Joe and I are also planning to compete with team “Graham Slam” in October.

What is your favorite workout?
My favorite workout, at this point, is probably Cindy.  I also love most WOD’s that involve running.

What is your LEAST favorite workout?
Wall balls were at one point my enemy. Currently, I am not the biggest fan of WOD’s with toes to bar.

What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?
My most memorable workout so far was a Saturday WOD with Lish and Hannah.  With their help and encouragement, that was the first time that I was able to RX the WOD.
Murph was also a fan favorite.  It was a real eye opener on what it meant to push yourself past your level of comfort.  I loved every part of being at the box that day!  

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?  
When in doubt, get to the box.  The rest will work itself out.

Meet Athlete of the month Liz Beets

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.

Born and raised in Jacksonville.   I have 3 sisters and an almost 4 year old nephew.  I have played sports all my life. Enjoy soccer and volleyball. Looking forward to sand volleyball starting this summer. Graduated from Illinois State University with a BS in Dietetics and Eastern Illinois University with a Masters Degree in Dietetics. Recently started my career as a Clinical Dietitian at Memorial Medical Center (have been there for 1 year this month).

Occupation?

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. I work at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.  Full-time Clinical Dietitian for Oncology patients, Renal/Urology patients, Kidney Transplant Team. I also bartend on the side (darn student loans) at the Irish Toad.

Hobbies/Interests

Spending time with  my family and friends. Summer. Boating. Sand volleyball. Working out at CarriageHouse!

Tell us something we don't know about you.

I was MVP on both soccer and volleyball teams in high school.  Most athletic female in senior high school class (senior superlatives). This was a long time ago, but not sure what else ?!

When did you start CrossFitting?

Initially in Novemeber of 2012. Took summer/fall/winter of 2013 off. Back at it, FOR GOOD, since February of this year.

Main reason for joining CHCF?

Stacy, my amazing Aunt, started in October of 2012, and convinced me to try it out.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?

I'm going to become strong and hopefully lose some weight and gain muscle.

What is your favorite part of CrossFit?

Working out with awesome people. Getting to know others and encouraging everyone :)

How has CHCF changed your life?

I've been able to meet and get to know some really awesome new people! It has made me a more positive and confident person with what I do in my day-to-day routine. Really, it just makes me a happy person.

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?

Toner body. Stronger. Able to run further distances.

What are your future training goals?

Competing in a competition. Hopefully by the end of this year I will be ready!

What is your favorite workout?

ALL? When I'm sweating, I know its a good workout!

What is your LEAST favorite workout?

Well burpees are not my favorite.

What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?


Murph. For sure. Had an awesome partner push me through that workout. And getting to relax and talk with everyone after.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?

You will LOVE it. Give it a chance, don't give up or get discouraged. Success takes time.

I grew up in the Triopia community and live in rural Arenzville with my husband of 31 years.  We have 2 wonderful sons (both married) and 2 grandchildren.

Program manager/associate director in Producer Technology at AIG Life Insurance.  I also bartend at Hamilton’s Catering’s event hall here in Jacksonville.  Book your next event at Hamilton’s!

Recent adventure you’re planning.
8 mile trail run up to 7400 feet in Colorado Sunday.  I need to plan a bigger adventure…any ideas?

Here are 3 quick facts: In my 20’s, I did the female Monster Arm Wrestling circuit at local bars. In 2003, I rode a mule 4 hours up an inactive volcano in the Philippines.  In 2011, I climbed 6 hours to the mountain ridge of Adams Canyon in Salt Lake City.

When did you start CrossFitting?
August 2010.

Main reason for joining CHCF?
Doing P90X alone is boring!  My sister-in-law introduced me to Carriage House while I was on my 2nd round of P90X.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?
I’m hooked, where has this stuff been all my life?

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
Working out with others who enjoy the same thing.  Not having to be ‘perfect’ or less than 40 years old.

How has CHCF changed your life?
CrossFit has brought me great friends.  It has helped me learn how eating impacts the way I feel.  It makes me feel stronger and more ‘alive’.

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?
I can lift way more.  I’m less anxious about trying physical activities (climbing, running…).

What are your future training goals?
Get past my fear of competitions.  I would like to compete at some point.  When I find the time to commit, I will get my Level 1 Certification.

What is your favorite workout?
Saturday team WODs.  No matter what it is, it is easier to get through it with support.   I love kettlebells and slam balls.

What is your LEAST favorite workout?
I enjoy them all but putting weight overhead with my arms wide still frightens me (snatch, overhead squat).

What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?
The night I dead-lifted almost 600 pounds.  Okay, it was a duo lift with Steve.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?
There is nothing that cannot be scaled or modified.  I would also warn them that there is a 95% chance they will get addicted.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.
I was born and raised in Winchester, and Alaina is from rural new berlin. We have two girls, jaidyn, 7 years old, and kynlee, who is 3. We moved to Jacksonville 6 years ago after I was hired by the city of Jacksonville as a full time firefighter. Alaina is a 2nd grade teacher for district 117 in Murrayville.

Occupation?  
Full time Firefighter and I work part time for Daws Monuments and Daws Funeral Homes.

Hobbies/Interests .  
This could be long….. Crossfit of course is my main hobby, but as a family we try to do anything exciting and outdoors. I’ve tried just about everything that I can compete at. My family owns a cabin in the woods outside alsey, il and we spend a lot of summer time there. We also love the Ozarks and make a trip there at least once every summer. I’m in a softball league, a pool league, a sand volleyball league, and I usually find a dirt track on the weekends to watch some racing. I sold my race car 2 years ago so I can now afford crossfit. I love waterskiing and won the state barefoot championships in 1992 and 1993 in both slalom and freestyle. I played football for 9 years and ran track in grade school and both years it was offered in high school.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
I feel like I’ve told you everything already! Lol. Ok. I broke my back when I fell off of a horse because the girt strap broke. No april fools, that’s a true story.

When did you start CrossFitting?
November 2012

Main reason for joining CHCF?
To beat Steve every day.. that didn’t work out. But instantly fell in love with everything CrossFit stands for and the competitiveness of it.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?
I’m outta shape. I couldn’t straighten my arms for about 10 days. We finally figured out what the rolling pin in our kitchen was for, Alaina rolled my biceps out for me.
 
What is your fitness background?
Have I not covered this yet??

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
You people. My favorite part is all of you reading this.  I love going to the gym to compete, to hangout, to release stress, to do work , to get beat up. All of it I guess. I love it all. Especially the competitions. I am so glad at 33 years old I can still compete at a sport other than golf. Cause I’m terrible at golf.

How has CHCF changed your life?
It has brought my wife and I closer, if that’s possible cause we were pretty close before. It’s gave us both new friends that we consider family.

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?
I’ve seen one of my best friends lose over 60 lbs and she is amazing. I’ve seen my wife get toned and aggressive in a sport that we both love. (which is really cool to me) I’ve seen 55 year old ladies that can beat most 20 yr olds I know in anything cardio. (also amazing) I’ve seen teenagers to 60 year olds give there all in a workout and end up on the floor in a pool of sweat only to come back the next day and do it again. The results are amazing and ever changing. I’m not sure there is ever a final result just continuously good ones.

What are your future training goals?
I hope to be able to help teach and train others at our gym. I love watching people progress and overcome and achieve personal goals.

What is your favorite workout?
Tough question, if I end up on top of the leaderboard for the day, that was my new favorite.

What is your LEAST favorite workout?
Any row over 1k. and kettlebell perfection 

What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?
So many I couldn’t name them all. Most involve the new person that is doing a wod for the first time and watching them struggle and push through, knowing I was in their shoes not so long ago. Ok, winning the valentines day wod with my wife was pretty awesome too.
 
What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?
First I would welcome them to the family, tell them it never gets easier, the pain never goes away, and see them tomorrow.

My Dad and my sister were the first people of my family to join Carriage House. It sounded and looked fun so I decided I wanted to try it out.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout? My very first thoughts were “This is the hardest workout I have ever done”, “I might pass out..”

What is your fitness background?
I played soccer from the age of 5-14.

What is your favorite part of CrossFit? My favorite part of Crossfit is all the encouragement you get from your “CHCF Family”.

How has CHCF changed your life? Crossfit has changed my life both physically, and mentally by building my self-esteem

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF? I have noticed that I have gained more muscle than I thought I would.

What are your future training goals?
My future training goal is to eventually become an official Crossfit Coach

What is your favorite workout? My favorite workout is Annie

What is your LEAST favorite workout?
My least favorite workout is anything that involves overhead pressing

What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?
My most memorable workout was Annie with Alaina. Alaina and I were pushing each other the whole time trying to beat one another. Props to Alaina, You got me on that one!

When I finally figured out how to do kipping pull-ups, when I lifted a 165# Deadlift

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?
You will be happy with yourself after the W.O.D even though it looks tough. Never give up! You can do whatever you put your mind to.

Meet Joe Darnell Feburary's Athlete of the month.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.
Last November I married my best friend, Casie.  Prior to that it was just Hank(my black lab) and me at home.  I have since inherited a beagle, Clinton, and a black cat, Boozer.

Hobbies/Interests
My wife got me into craft beers and this last Christmas my mom and sister bought me a homebrew kit.  I’m bottling my first batch next week.

Recent adventure you’re planning.
The wife and I are still finalizing our honeymoon plans, but it will probably consist of a beach and tequila.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.

When did you start CrossFitting?
I started Crossfit in late November 2012.

Main reason for joining CHCF?
I remember catching the crossfit games on ESPN and being amazed at the workouts.  Sometime after that, my friend Brent had started at Capital City Crossfit in Springfield and suggested I give CHCF a try.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?
I don’t remember what the WOD was other than it had box jumps.  I remember driving home and thinking I was going to have to pull over and puke.
 
What is your fitness background?
I played football and competed in track and field at JHS.  During college I would do the normal gym routine of Back/Bis, Chest/Tris and would spend a little time doing cardio, such as, elliptical or treadmill.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
My favorite part of Crossfit is the community.  I have felt welcome since day one and enjoy cheering each member on as they break new boundaries.  I can’t imagine myself not doing Crossfit.

How has CHCF changed your life?
Crossfit has opened my eyes to what fitness means.  It has also introduced me to a lot of great people.

What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?
I lost about 20lbs right out of the gate.  Since then I continue to see my body composition change and my strength and endurance increase.

What are your future training goals?
I would like to complete a muscle-up by the end of 2014.  I also want to get proficient in double-unders.

What is your favorite workout?  
Anything with a row.  Except for a 10k row, that was awful.

What is your LEAST favorite workout?
Anything with burpees!!

What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?
10k row was one of the most memorable.  While not overly exciting, the suck factor was quite high.

Do you have any other special or successful CHCF memories/moments?
One of my favorite CHCF moments was at the D-Town Throwdown.  One of the WODs required each team member to complete at least one rope climb.  Hannah Graham latched onto the rope like a bulldog and inched her way up, while all of us cheered her on.  That moment really solidified the community/family feeling that CHCF has.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?
Don’t worry if you’re not RX’ing WODs.  It takes time!  Work hard and be patient.

Going on my very first 'camping trip' in Michigan this summer.  I'm terrified.  Meredith & entire family love camping.  I do not.

I was the only female athlete to win two state titles in a running event in consecutive years while in high school.

7.)  When did you start crossfit?

July 2013

8.)  Main reason for joining Crossfit?

Meredith 'kept bringing it up' for an entire year before we came to our first class.  She had watched the Crossfit games on tv.  It wasn't until Joe Darnell took the time to tell me about his experience with Carriage House that I made the decision to come try it out.

9.)  What were your thoughts after you completed your first crossfit workout?

First thought: cancel our gym membership.  Second thought: I'm gonna be real sore tomorrow.

10.)  What is your fitness background?

I've been running since 5th grade.  I played basketball, softball, and volleyball at various times through grade school and high school.  

11.)  What is your favorite part of crossfit?

Learning Olympic lifting

12.)  How has CHCF changed your life?

I know I'm happier and healthier since starting crossfit.  I'm more confident.  I've made so many new friendships with really great people.

13.)  What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?

I've lost weight and my clothes fit better.  My running has gotten faster.

I would like to run a marathon and compete in a crossfit competition.

I'm still recovering from doing 74 pull-up burpees.

Meet  Kelsey  Danenberger December's Athlete of the Month

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.
I work full-time at Memorial Physician Services in the billing department, and also go to school at Benedictine University full-time to finish my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. I volunteer with Girls on the Run and Big Brothers Big Sisters, where I have been matched with my “little” brother for almost 3 years. Outside of work and school, I love spending every chance I get with my niece and nephew.
Hobbies/Interest:
I love traveling, watching sports, learning how to cook, and spending time with my married friends with kids.

I broke my ankle playing softball when I was 12 and have a plate and 8 screws in my ankle.
When did you start CrossFitting? February 2013
Main reason for joining CHCF?
I wanted to lose weight and become healthier. I had always heard of people doing CrossFit and thought that is NOT for me. Curt told me he had been doing it and I would love it so I decided to give it a shot.
What were your thoughts after you completed your first CrossFit workout?
“What did I get myself into?!”
What is your fitness background?
I don’t really have a “fitness” background but I was always active in sports growing up and played softball and volleyball throughout high school.
What is your favorite part of CrossFit?
The support and encouragement and friendships I’ve made at CH.
How has CHCF changed your life?
CF has definitely changed my life both physically and mentally. It makes me feel happy, healthy and strong!
What results have you seen so far since coming to CHCF?
I lost 50 lbs., gained strength and finally realized that having “big legs” is OK.
What are your future training goals?
Run more 5Ks, maybe a half marathon, and do more competitions if my anxiety will allow.
What is your favorite workout?
Clean & Jerk, Back Squat and any WOD that involves rowing, kettlebells or slam balls.
What is your LEAST favorite workout?
Anything with burpees!
What is your most memorable workout with CHCF?
My most memorable WOD was one of the first WODs that I did with running. We had to run a mile and I ended up getting lost, stopping at someone’s house (whose dogs were wanting to jump out of the fence to attack me), to ask for directions at 5:15 in the morning.
Do you have any other special or successful CHCF memories/moments?
I can’t think of one in particular but I love that no matter how I’m feeling or what mood I’m in when I walk in the door, that I always leave happier. I think that has a lot to do with the people I’m surrounded by that are always there to support and encourage me through every WOD.
What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit?
Keep going!! It is going to be tough and hard and painful at times (okay, every time), but the progress and improvements you will see physically and mentally will be so worth it. It will be one of the BEST things you will ever do for yourself.

Tell us a little bit about you and your family.
I currently reside in Woodson, IL with my two boys, Ty (10) and AJ (7).  We’ve lived in Woodson for the past 9 years.  I recently finished two terms as Mayor of Woodson and I’m also an active member at Salem Lutheran Church and School in Jacksonville.  You won’t find a bigger Green Bay Packers Fan in all of Central Illinois, but don’t hold that against me.
 
Occupation?  
I am a Vice President at SomerCor 504, Inc. in Springfield, IL, where I help small businesses obtain commercial loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Hobbies/Interests
Besides the routing for the Green Bay Packers and anything involving my boys, I enjoy; softball, soccer, yard work, garage sales and an occasional bubble bath.

Peaches - congratulations!  I just read all about you and it brought a tear to my eye.  You are such an inspiration to our community, and others.  You strive to give your all in everything you do.  I was so happy I was able to be there when you got your pullups - what an accomplishment!  You are such a blessing to work with, wod with, and to have around.  I am so glad to have met you.  Looking forward to many more years with you.  Love ya!
